Ah, Ouagadougou. As the plane honed in on landing, I recognized the easily walkable grid layout the guidebook had mentioned, though not very many lights; it looked very rural. The very first experience in Ouaga typified those to come: We walked down the stairs from the plane to two trams waiting on the tarmac. The first one filled as I approached the last two steps. I was motioned earnestly to the tram efficiently idling empty nearby the full one. The second tram filled in short order, and we were OFF!--on a two minute ride tops! to the terminal. It actually felt as though the tram did a 180 degree turn and opened the doors, the ride was so short. It was the sweetest thing. I saw a young man holding a placard with my name on ... read more

Went to Goree Island today, the famed "point of no return" for my African forebears who were sold or traded into slavery. Learned that the men were priced by weight, the babies by the number of teeth, women were priced based on their breast size or whether they were virgins. Men who weighed less than about 120 lbs were put together in a room and fed more for fattening up; women who became pregnant by the slave traders were allegedly freed and the babies sold into slavery. In general, people would be held in the slave house in iron shackles for three months, 24 hours a day, allowed out of their rooms once a day, to relieve themselves. The curator gave a commanding summary at the foot of the stairs to the slave house. He said ... read more

Africa » Senegal » Cape Verde Peninsula » Pink Lake February 20th 2007

Today we went to a fishing village in Ngor, visited a school, met the principal, some kids and gave them some supplies. We also looked at some possible accommodations for us in the village. The nervewracking walking on sand and too-recent memory of lifting heavy bags did not incline me to even consider them (besides, we already had a place, didn't we? ) "I Try, Man" was buying a phone card at the village store when, suddenly, English erupted in my direction from behind the counter, "You are fine. You are very fine!" I attempted to demure and be appreciative in French. I think I said "Thank you, please." Eventually, tires were inflated and the reason we came to Ngor seemed to be on again: we were going to visit Pink Lake. We joined a tour ... read more

Africa » Senegal » Cape Verde Peninsula » Dakar February 19th 2007

Today was our first full day in Senegal. Unbelievably, I'd somehow not packed my journal. (Listen, I've forgotten my passport before--more than once--but never my journal. I was practically dry-heaving in withdrawal. S produced composition books from a suitcase of goods she'd brought to give and trade and let me have one. See? That's why I keep her around-- not just for comic relief--there's also notebooks, Peanut M&Ms, hand sanitizer, toilet paper--but I'm getting ahead of the story... First impressions of Dakar? Not good. After rendezvousing in Casablanca then sleeping warm and fed (twice!) on the plane, we were jostled through Immigration and wound up at the baggage claim turnstile. As luck would have it, my bag was the first one off, weighing in at, what was it again? 50 pounds? S' was next, weighing only ... read more

So I land at LaGuardia, with temperatures more frigid than they have been in years, with only a wrap sweater for warmth. (Who needs a coat in Dakar and Ouagadougou, after all?) After the flight landed, I conferred with S to discover that yes, in fact, the flight to Dakar was cancelled for some unknown reason and South African Airways didn't have another available flight till Monday. Some of the coldest weather on record, and I, am coatless and possibly, homeless in New York. After many sighs, some finagling and a pleasant chat through crosstown traffic with a fine Pakistani cab driver (Yasseen), S and I lament our fate over a buffalo burger and vodka tonics. She's coatless too. Rather than hang around watching DVDs and otherwise killing time till Monday, we decide to reroute through ... read more

Historically, the start of my adventures have been fraught with surprises; some of my own undoing, and for others, the airline was at fault. This time, it was Delta (again!) I get to the airport with time to spare. At check-in, the kiosk displays that my flight is "unavailable" (kiosk-speak for cancelled, I later learn) and offers me another some 12 hours later, when I'm supposed to be well on my way to Dakar. At the direction of a ticket agent, I head to a "black phone" to let someone know the flight is unacceptable. Thankfully, my connecting flight from JFK to Dakar was an evening flight. Since I was at National before 10:00 in the morning for my cancelled flight, I had ample time to spend-- * waiting in line to use the "black phone", ... read more
