From the Highveld to the Cape
Hi Leo. I enjoyed reading this. It's always good to see your own country through the eyes of a sojourner. You have an easy relaxed style. I would have been interested to see your reporting on the more remote parts where I live. Happy Travels

Thanks
Thanks GogoBuzz. Nice name by the way! I always think back to the Vodacom Ads with the 'Yebo Gogo' catchline and the old white-haired guy... So where is it you live? There's a chance I may have visited it previously.

It is
Thanks guys :) I have visited Durban regularly over the years with my family, since my earliest memories really. It has changed a lot over the years but it's still the same sand, sea and laid back people! May it remain so for years to come.

sublime music of the desert ladies
Takes me back to the Tuareg ladies playing at our wedding at Timbuktu...tea ceremonies in the desert...goatskin tents...the sublime aura of desert life. What a wonderful experience you are having in Algeria. I will try to track down some music from Hasna and if successful will post it to World Blues Music thread on TBs World Music Forum. Ah...what a life you lead.

Music of the desert
That must have been wonderful indeed! Did you plan to get married in Timbuktu? Not many people can say that I'm sure. Sadly back in soggy UK now but need to carry on writing whilst the memories are fresh. The photos help spur the neurons as well. I see you are a prolific contributor. Some great photos!

Bonjour
Welcome to Travelblog. I have been considering visiting Algeria so your blog was enlightening. Sounds fascinating. Do I perceive you regard it as a safe destination? Hope your luggage is never lost again and saddened to hear of beggars from Mali which is one of my favourite places.

Re: travel in Algeria
Hello David. Thanks for reading my blog. I have three more chapters to upload so must get onto that. sorry for the delay in replying. I can only speak subjectively as regards travelling in Algeria. I was lucky enough to have natives accompany me wherever I went which certainly made communication and introductions easier. If you have French that will certainly help although in the smaller provincial towns Arabic takes precedence. But your question regards safety. I never felt threatened by anyone there. To the contrary the people were friendly and especially fond of my 'Englishness'. You will find that many of the youth look to the English-speaking world for inspiration rather than the Francophone. The gendarme were in force most places I went along the roads and at major intersections if that's any reassurance? By all means read my other chapters but also refer to the Lonely Planet forum on Algeria where there is some useful information. Hope that helps.
