After spending five nights in Broken Hill it was nice to be back on the road again (I think there’s a song along those lines!!). We left Broken Hill and headed for Peterborough in South Australia. This country of ours never ceases to amaze us the landscape changes every day. We arrived at our pre-determined destination which is a free camp spot about 2 kms East of Peterborough where we met up with Ross and Alice’s friends, Phil and Robyn. We set up camp and collected fire wood for our camp fire. Even had candelabra tonight as it was our first night together. It was nice getting to know Phil and Robyn and a good night was had by all. ... read more

We went to see "The Big Picture" today. This is the most amazing painting we have ever seen. It is the world's largest painting which stands 12 meters high and 100 meters long. WOW!!! It looks so real. It is a scene of the outback but the way it has been presented is amazing. I highly recommend a visit to see this it was pained by Peter Anderson. In the afternoon the four of us went out to Silverton which is only 23 kms. from Broken Hill. This is also an old mining town with some really historical buildings and the famous Silverton Hotel. This hotel has been used in many movies such as ‘A Town like Alice’; Mad Max; Razorback and many more. It was also used in the old "Flying Doctors" series on television. ... read more

I have always wanted to come to Broken Hill to see the amazing array of art galleries. Well I haven’t been disappointed. We went to the Pro Hart gallery the other day and what an amazing place it is. So many paintings by this wonderful artist. He had such a great sense of humour. You could look at his paintings for hours and never see everything they are truly wonderful. We also visited Jack Absolom’s Gallery. Now his paintings are so real they are truly unbelievable. All of his paintings are of the outback as he has spent most of his life there. We were extremely lucky enough to meet the man himself. What a character. A real Australian bushy. The best part of the whole trip so far is that he gave me some really ... read more

Well they told us the road was bad......took us 6 hours to drive 240 kms. Lee says it was a "shocker". Our caravan is now officially an "off-roader" and it looks like it. Red dust everywhere. We passed 11 cars heading North but only one other car and van going the same way as us. We got to Tibooburra and stayed in only our second caravan park. We had power for the first time which was quite a novelty. Cost $6 per person plus $6 for power, so not bad. Fuel (diesel) is $1.96 per litre here so quite pricy. Tibooburra is an old gold mining town with 2 pubs and not much else. The next day we drove 130kms to Cameron Corner. This is where the 3 States meet, Queensland, NSW and South Australia. There ... read more

If you are ever in the South West of Queensland you must have a mud bath at Eulo. This is a querky little place that has mud coming from the artesian basin. They have the old claw foot baths including one stretch bath (for two). How it works is they put mud in the bath with some warm water, you soak in the bath for 1/2 hour get out apply mud all over, wait until it drys and starts to go hard, then back in the bath to wash it off, then shower off the remainder. You then rub moisturiser on yourself which is made from the date palm oil. BEAUTIFUL! Even makes old leather skin like ours feel like a baby's bottom...... Then it was back on the road. This time we stopped at Nocundra ... read more

We finally left home on Friday, 2 May 2008 on our first "grey nomad" adventure since retirement. Woke at 4a.m. and left at 6.30a.m. Good run through Brisbane and made our first stop just West of Warwick. We then drove to Goondoowindi for an expensive fuel stop and had spent our first and second nights at a lovely little spot on the banks of the Moonee River at Nindigully Pub. This is our first "free" camp spot and if the rest are like this it should be good. This Pub is famous for a few things, one it is the oldest licensed Pub in Queensland established in 1864; two it holds a big New Year's Eve bash every year with the largest fire cracker in Queensland; three it holds the annual B & S Ball (Bachelor ... read more

Welcome to Lee and Sandy O'Neill's travel blog. We retired in March 2008 and our feet haven't had time to touch the ground ever since. We both love travelling and over the years have been to many varied and interesting places. I think over 50 countires in total. Now that we are retired we hope to go to some of the places we haven't been yet such as South America, China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia to name a few. We are also going to become "grey nomads" and have bought the obligatory caravan with all the mod cons. Our first venture around Australia was 25 years ago when our children were young. We went from Brisbane to Ayers Rock and Alice Springs, Darwin, Broome, Perth and got as far as Norsman when we had an accident and ... read more
