This morning we had breakfast, and every meal here is a delight as you can just have whatever looks good and help yourself. My chores today are in the elephant kitchen which is fun as you can have music on. We unload tonnes of bananas, pumpkins, pineapples and watermelons, stack them and wash them with disinfectant before they are chopped up with a machete into the baskets for feeding time. Then the elephants are fed when they come up to the platform by putting each piece into their trunks, that job never gets old. Then the elephants have their bath which I’ve done a few of but am avoiding from now on because it’s fun but it can’t be good for the healing process. Unloading the trucks is around the clock, elephants just never stop eating ... read more

Had an amazing breakfast and set out to find the office I’m leaving from. Managed to find it and used all the rest of my money to pay my balance, got very lucky there. Leaving for the park as a volunteer rather than visitor was really exciting and arriving was surreal. We spend the day getting orientated and fed. I follow the news feed on the park so I knew that they had a 8day old baby which they had just rescued. He had been rejected by his mother and Lek and her team had brought him to the park with his mother. They both still belong to the village and the whole situation is very complicated as although they are paying for all his vetenary treatment and providing 24hour care, he could be taken back ... read more

This morning was my deep dive and was the best dive yet! It is so much easier once you’ve learnt and you can just enjoy it! I got to dive with a dive computer and plan the depth and timing of the dive which was fab. When we came to do out skills on the ocean floor, the sand was covered in sea urchins, my arch nemesis. I find them absolutely terrifying and I already had being 29m underwater to deal with. Eventually, I found myself a nice bare patch to do my skills, but then they just moved towards me and you can feel them brushing against your bare legs and I really didn't appreciate it. However, coming back up to about 22-24m, you see so much. It was amazing and that’s a credit towards ... read more

This morning was a 5am start to get our gear and head out to dive. It makes such a difference once you know what to expect and you can enjoy it more. Today we were being filmed and I can get a copy of the video which will be better than anything I can describe here, so I’ll have to show you when I’m home. One eventful experience was my first attempt at a sommersault off the top of the boat on a dare. I managed to hit to water, left eye first and emerged bleeding, only a bit. It was nothing after a bit of ice but looked dramatic enough for me to be owed a beer. Ten we went straight into our second dive. Afterwards, we were qualified Open water divers! Hurrah, as we ... read more

Today, we had theory in the morning with more paperwork and quizzes before we went to get ready for our first open water dive in the afternoon. The water was so rough, throwing you around, so setting the gear up on the boat was a challenge. I managed to full on smack my head but luckily no one noticed, oh dear. Definitely nervous but it was so exciting stepping into the water. I’ll admit I found the first few dives tough as I struggled to equalise which I found painful and rather alarming. The only was I can is by swallowing but the dry air makes that so difficult and obviously the more you start to worry about it the more difficult it becomes. Swallowing also requires you to temporarily stop breathing so I’d be waiting ... read more

We had the confined pool all to ourselves this morning, which was amazing as every other new diver was using it in the afternoon, clever Anna. Initially, breathing underwater was absolutely terrifying and my initial reaction was to totally give up but I didn’t re-surface and it only got better. We did all sorts of skills and it was a challenge but satisfying to get the hang of. After five hours we took a welcomed break. We had more theory in the afternoon and marking out homework before going swimming in the sea. The water is so clear, warm and quite shallow so you can just sit or swim, it is incredible; I cannot get over how beautiful it is here. Night, Katie... read more

Arrive s in Koh Tao this morning and had booked a taxi to get me from boat to resort. Checked myself in and had been upgraded which was lovely as A/C can be so much more expensive and it is a great to come home to everyday. The room seems so big, we’ve been having up to four of us. It’s feels wrong living alone. Had my theory this afternoon and met my instructor. I travelled in with a French couple and a German man travelling by himself. So, we decided we’d have a German instructor called Anna, just the two of us and she’ll teach in English with a bit of German. This was fab because you can have as many as 6 or more in a group and for no less money and I’ve ... read more

This morning we got up as early as we could manage and went down for the buffet breakfast. The restaurant had a fountain. The highlight, however, was that they had a Popcake, something that I must now possess. You press a button and in 20secs it makes fresh American pancakes, six in all. And it is amazing. Anyone who has lived with me will understand my appreciation for a kitchen aid gimmick especially one that results in such deliciousness. You could have any breakfast you wanted, made fresh in front of you. After, even when we checked out, we asked if we could spend the day at the pool. And they said yes as they just never say no to you and they were filming for a promo at the time. So basically, we spent the ... read more

The next day was fairly chilled out, it was the last day for the boys so they had a few things to do and I booked up my bus South for when they took off. We didn’t have enough beds, in the apartment Ben and Andy were put up in, so Ben and I booked a 5star last minute for a ridiculous discount. We checked out their apartment on the way which was very nice indeed went swimming on the roof to take a break from the heat. Then Ben and headed off to check in and were absolutely amazed. Everyone was asking if we were married etc and we corrected them at first but by the time we got to the front desk we were teasing each other about it and went and got upgraded. ... read more

Today we headed out at lunchtime after checking out, taking things very easy. Had our last lunch before we leave today and then headed for the afternoon viewing of the Royal Palace. It was a bit of a rush and we were down to our last few dollars but we made it in. I had to fashion myself a skirt out of a pashmina which in Bangkok would be fine but here you’re actually not allowed to get away with it. Can’t believe I wore shorts, felt like such a tourist and didn’t even have the money to buy something proper. But must have done an okay job as we got in fine and it was a beautiful place to walk around and see. Again, not being a photographer, my photos were rubbish compared to what ... read more
