Last Saturday we were blessed to have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with our friends (aka our Korean family) in the area. We didn't have to travel too far, just a taxi ride to the top of a hill in Pyeongnae where we just happened to arrive with a bunch of others waeguk-ins (foreigners). There were enormous amounts of food! The appetizers table was practically overflowing as were the tables for the main course / countertops / stove. Punch and toasts were made, the rest of the people arrived and we set to work eating. Following the dinner we took part in an age old tradition of going around the room, (introducing ourselves & saying which country we were from) and telling what we were thankful for. We were all especially thankful for our friend Dan. (Long ... read more

On Saturday the 7th of November Jess and 5 friends ventured to Sungkok art musem to see: Portraits of Shoes, Stories of Feet. The exhibit was on the history of footwear & sponsored by the French Cultural Center (which I am explaining because a lot of the signs I took pictures of were in French). I won't write too much... just enough to explain what you can't see for yourself. This is really just about the shoes ;) The exhibit was divided into 5 sections & featured 62 pairs of shoes from the 18th-21st century. The exhibit also featured pieces by artists including drawings, sculptures, videos & photographs of shoes. The five sections are: 'Rock and Roll and Baroque', 'Sport and Nature', 'Politic and Extravagancy', 'Sensual or Audacious' and 'Strangeness'. These topics cover the fun aspects ... read more

The wine train is something Jess' mom told her about right after she arrived. Unfortunately in the madness that is jetlag she completely forgot about it until a friend reminded her, mentioning it would be a fun trip. That was in August. It took a while to get everything together, and it took some doing to make it work, but on Halloween, a group of 9 of us got together and finally made the journey. It meant having to start very early in the morning (catching a bus from our town at 7am!) as the train left Seoul station at 9, and we were advised to be there by 8:30 at the latest. We had a little seating situation (we were positioned in a line of tables going down the car rather than in a group ... read more

Chuseok is Korean Thanksgiving. Although Koreans have a few major holidays, Chuseok is said to be the biggest of them all. It is when Koreans return to their hometowns to eat, drink & be merry for a few days. The female Koreans we know complain that it will be a few days of cooking and cleaning. The men seem to have the easier end - eating, drinking and talking. All in all though, it is somewhat similar to the American Thanksgiving in that you spend time with family, catch up on what has been going on and give thanks for what you have. We had considered going to Chuncheon for a few months before we finally got the opportunity. We even got on the train one time thinking that it was only about 20 minutes away ... read more

Hello again! September has been quite the month for us in S. Korea, we have been able to relax into our lives, check out some areas of Seoul, visit with Jess' friend who came to see her parents and have fun with our friends here. Although the month began the way August had left off - hot and somewhat humid - the weather became progressively cooler and the last weeks actually began to get a little cold at night. In school we spent the entire month (minus the first week) working with 5th graders, so a few shots from those classes are also included. It was nice to relax into the rhythm of the weeks although the school has been giving us a bit of trouble lately... we'll let you know how that turns out. At ... read more

Hello all! It's taken some time to get this together what with leaving for China right after it happened and then coming back and planning for summer camp plus the 2nd and 6th grade curriculums but better late than never, right? This is really just a run down of the teacher's union trip we took the two days before we left for Beijing. It was a great opportunity for us to get to know some of the other teachers in our school (as well as the principle and vice principle) and see a LOT of Korea in a short period of time. The events leading up to the trip made us question whether or not it would be worth it but now we wonder when the next one will be held! *We decided to write this ... read more

Hopefully I had you all on the edge of your seats waiting for the next China installment.... or more likely you were leaning back snoozing by the time you made it to the end of the last one :) Hence the reason for cutting the story in two. Day 4: "Temple Mania" We were up and to Yonghe Gong Lama Temple very early. This temple is considered to be "Beijing's most magnificent Buddhist temple." The short story of how it became famous: "The temple was once the official residence of Count Yin Zhen who became emperor in 1723 and traded up to the Forbidden City. His name changed to Yongzheng, and his former residence became Yonghe Palace (Yonghe Gong). In 1744 it was converted into a lamasery and became home to legions of monks from Mongolia ... read more

Note: So sorry about the order of the photos... Travelblog is having a laugh at my expense and each time I load them they move further and further from their original order and it will only let me fix a few!! Regardless only a small number of our photos made it on. If you are interested in seeing the others (or are just incredibly bored and need something to fill large gaps of your time) please leave me a note w/ your email (send a comment, I will not publish your email if you don't want). Note: If you found this looking for advice / information on coming to Korea, check out Jess' other blog specificially made for just that purpose: http://kimchiquestions.blogspot.com/ Hello again! It's taken some time to put this together making sure we were able to give you some more information about our new home. We know you've heard of South Korea - in fact, you've probably heard about it on the news lately in the form of a man who whooped Tiger in golf. Yes, Korea came into the spotlight for taking the world by surprise. I personally wouldn't be too shocked if this became a pattern over the next few years as Korea is holding quite the hand. (I am talking about South Korea of course, not the North which is inevitably all over the news & usually ... read more

Hello it's Fran. Sorry it's taken so long to write something here. I've been busy over here settling in and spending so much time at the school. When i have had free time over here it's been spent exploring the area, eating weird and wonderful food, meeting people and trying not to get rained on in between. Things over here are going well and i'm sure they'll get even better. I just wanted to quickly share with you some of things we've come across so far. Food To start with the food is excellent. In the beginning going out to eat was a guessing game followed by a spicy surprise. Since then then we have been able to pick the food we want almost every time. Despite not knowing what I was getting to eat there ... read more
