Ok, as promised, a short blog on Villa El Salvador, what it´s all about and why its so amazing. In April 1971, during a time of great change in Peru, a group of nearly 200 poor families who had been living in slums in the centre of Lima ´invaded´an area of desert just outside of the city. The government tried to evict them, leading to a violent clash with two young members of the poor families being killed and many more injured. In a bid to more peacefully solve the situation, the Peruvian government offered the group another area of land, and offered to provide basic services such as electricity, water and access roads.
