After another energy consuming weekend, I was happy to get back on the high-speed train in comfort to Beijing. The ride I had in store was about five and a half hours, and I slept for the majority of it. I’d have to say I fell in love with the bullet train the first time I took it en route to Suzou. I've always loved trains for the fact that you can actually observe a bit of the country that you are traveling in and it feels like moving from one destination to another is less of a waste of time. And with these high-speed trains, it definitely accelerates the process. The average speed is around 300km/hr and you could have a full glass of liquid on your tray, and it would be barely disturbed. I'd ... read more

I’d have to be honest… When I first decided on China, it wasn’t first on my list of next places to travel, however, the fact that I had two highschool friends over there for a few years as contacts had its appeal. Furthermore, the person who I was staying with wasn’t just any friend, or any contact I had, it was the infamous Richard Forbes… teaching sensation in China, who has been paving the way for foreigners like me for years. I’ve heard the stories of the many who had the pleasure of staying with Richard and some who have taught along side him in China and all had one thing in common to say… This was going to be a helluva trip. So as I boarded my flight I wasn’t exactly sure what I had ... read more

Well, it's time to satisfy my itchy feet and the far east is calling my name again, but this time further north. My next destination is China. My good friend Richard Forbes has been there now for a few years paving the way, so I figure it's time to pay him a visit. While I'm there, I'll see what other adventures China has to offer and hopefully have something interesting to write about. Stops so far on my list include Beijing and Hong Kong, but I'm sure as I touch down, this list will greatly expand and be open for a very flexible trip. Good times!... read more

North America » Canada » Nunavut » Iqaluit March 15th 2013

I’ve found myself on a trip back to where I’ve been before, Iqaluit Nunavut, but this time in the winter. The purpose of this trip was the same as the last, primarily contributing to mental health services as a psychiatric nurse in a community with some unique issues. I was definitely looking forward to the true Arctic experience this time around complete with snow and cold. As I hopped on the plane towards my first stop in Ottawa, I was hoping that the travel process was going to be smoother this time around. Luckily, I had something to look forward to, and that was seeing some good friends, Keks and Dobes, who were visiting Montreal, but agreed to meet me for some good times. And good times were had. It was nice to get out and ... read more

North America » Canada » Nunavut » Iqaluit July 29th 2012

Entering my last few days of my working adventure, I thought I’d reflect on the past couple of weeks in Iqaluit. My last update included some interesting festivities and I’ve been more or less doing much of the same. On my days off, I have devoted most of my time to exploring the surrounding landscape. The weekend after my last post, I decided to take off on a hike that has been done by many of the local people who have settled in this area for thousands of years, the hike along the coast to the nearby “suburb “of Iqaluit, Apex. Luckily, the weather had gotten quite nice, which unfortunately brought on the one problem I’ve found with this city, but is definitely a familiar one with the north... the mosquitoes. Usually, when there is a ... read more

North America » Canada » Nunavut » Iqaluit July 9th 2012

This has been a trip I've wanted to do for a long time... A working trip in Nunavut Territory, Canada. The timing hasn't worked out in past opportunities, so in mid June when all the stars aligned, I accepted my first Psychiatric Nursing contract in Iqaluit. I've always had some idea of what the north was like and have done some research, but somewhere as foreign as northern Canada; it’s tough to get a grasp. From what I understood, it’s not exactly a tourist hotspot. My overnight layover was in Ottawa and after a fairly painless flight; I checked into my hotel. I had some dinner and met two girls at the bar who were heading up to Pangnirtung, another community in Nunavut. We both had similar curiosities about up north and it was nice to ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Cape Town May 12th 2012

Once Durban had me nice and relaxed, it was time to move onto my final destination, Cape Town. Cape Town was the first city discovered by Europeans in search for a passage to India, and what a city it is. Immediately as I was picked up and taken to my hostel, I was captured by it's amazing landscape. I was introduced to Table Mountain and we continued into the city, the vibe had me feeling like I was in a dryer Vancouver with a more Afro-European twist. The cities Dutch and English heritage was definitely felt while driving down some of the streets. I checked into my hostel, The Backpack, and was impressed with the facilities. My mind was blown when I stepped out on the veranda out back and immediately slammed in the face with ... read more

Africa » South Africa » KwaZulu-Natal » Durban May 7th 2012

After a great experience in Zimbabwe, the next stop on my trip was through Johannesburg again, to King Shaka International Airport in Durban. Durban is on the east coast of Africa and the main city in Kwa-Zulu Natal, historical home of the infamous Zulu tribes, among others. It's an oceanside town, with a much more tropical climate compared to most of South Africa and immediately as I touched down I felt the humidity. It was a change from the dryness of Zimbabwe's heat. I was picked up by the guesthouse I was staying at and realized I made a bit of a mistake when booking so last minute. Sadly, I was staying about 30 minutes outside of Durban in a suburb called Amanzimtoti, so making it to the heart of town was a bit of a ... read more

Africa » Zimbabwe » Hwange May 3rd 2012

One of my day trips from Victoria Falls included a 2 hour drive east to Hwange, Zimbabwe. This was home to my sponsored child, Bravo Shoko. He lives in rural Hwange, which is about 40 minutes outside of the main Hwange township. However, try not to imagine a large, developed town as this "township," as it is quite sparse and consists of a few government buildings, shops, one large grocery store and a clothing store. There are also many developed houses as well. However, much of the population in Hwange lives in the rural areas, which are a huge contrast from even the under developed township. After arriving to town and having a slight briefing at the World Vision office, the two World Vision escorts and I did some grocery shopping to bring some food to ... read more

Africa » Zimbabwe » Victoria Falls May 2nd 2012

After the intensity of the hunt, it was time for what I thought to be a peaceful journey to check out Victoria Falls. It was somewhat bittersweet because I was sad to be leaving my new friends in Jo-berg, but I was looking forward to the next leg of my trip. The flight was a much more pleasant one, only an hour and a half north to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and I landed in a very sparse non air conditioned airport, only to go through an arduous customs process. However, I did manage to get a cool new visa in my passport and one thing I've learned while traveling, is that you have to look at the bright side of everything. I caught a taxi to my hostel, Shoestrings Backpackers, and passed through Victoria Falls town. ... read more
