Thursday afternoon, I took the bus tour of Glasgow which was really interesting. It was not quite what I was expecting, since we were in a one-story bus with windows as opposed to being in a double-decker bus where it's easier to see everything. However, it provided insight into how much bigger the city is than I had originally realized. The tour, which took us about two hours, took us to all of the major sights in and around Glasgow, inserting historical and architectural commentary throughout. All of the information was very interesting, but it was a bit hard to hear, so unfortunately I'm not sure how much of it I actually retained. The next morning, Friday, was the Loch Lomond bus tour. After walking to the university and meeting our guide, Gary, we got on ... read more

On Sunday evening, after an incredibly long journey to London Gatwick airport followed by a series of delays, I finally touched down in Glasgow, excited to take the university shuttle to the flat I would be staying in and start to get settled in. Unfortunately, however, the buses only ran every two hours and I had just missed the last one. So, I had to wait in the airport for about an hour and a half before the next one came. The journey to the university was quick, only about 15-20 minutes from the airport. We were the first stop, and I was able to walk across the street from the hall to pick up my keys. I'm staying on the third floor in a flat with four other people. We each have our own bedroom, ... read more

Well, it's been a fun-filled second half of the week here in London. Tomorrow afternoon, I leave for Glasgow, so today was my last full day in the city. Wednesday, I took the opportunity to get some much needed rest and sleep in before two performances: The Book of Mormon and Dogfight, both of which were incredible and very cool to watch. They were very different, but really special in their own way. Thursday began my journey on the double decker tour bus around London. It was a great way to see a lot of the sights without having to worry about how to get there. Thursday I spent most of the day on their blue line, which included around 40 stops all around London. Some of the highlights were Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben ... read more

It's been a busy few days, so I haven't been able to post in a while, but I thought I'd take a few minutes and write about the past few days. On Sunday, after a lovely dinner with cousin Larry, I ran back to the apartment to grab my luggage before standing outside trying to hail a taxi. This was harder than I had anticipated, and I was beginning to worry that I wouldn't be able to secure one when I finally noticed someone getting out of one. I ran down to it, and was able to secure it. We then began our journey to the JFK airport. I was a bit concerned about arriving on time, since I had left a bit later than I had wanted to, and I still needed to print my ... read more

It's hard to believe that this day is already here, but today is my last day in New York City. Since last posting, I've been busy seeing family, friends and shows. Thursday, I got to spend lunch and the afternoon with my friend from high school, Melissa. She just started graduate school, and it was great to catch up with her. Later that evening, I had the opportunity to see Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre. After seeing The Book of Mormon and Wicked (both of which I had seen in Chicago), I noticed one major difference between theatre in New York and Chicago: the sets are much more established and built into the theatres in New York. For example, at the Gershwin, there was a huge wall covering in the lobby of the theatre with Wicked-related ... read more

Thanks for checking out my travel blog! I'll be updating it periodically as I complete my Richter grant research project in New York City and London, and my study abroad experience in Glasgow, Scotland! After an early morning to make it to Midway airport on time, I arrived in New York City to a bustling metropolis that featured greater traffic than usual (the cab driver noted). After a stop and go cab ride, I arrived at the building I'm staying in on the 25th floor. The room is complete with a balcony and a view of the new One World Trade Center building. The area is very nice, and there is a Metra station right across the street. Anxious to start exploring the city, I took the Metra into Times Square where I found a place ... read more
