South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro March 13th 2011

Greetings all… I have been so swept away by Carneval and all my adventures of late I have been somewhat lax and not given you an update for some time. Im sure you keen to know how the last 6 weeks have passed! From my shenanigans in The Pantanal (fishing for piranhas, swimming with caimens) to my sojourn in the colonial town of Paraty and all day caiprinha fest amidst the islands of the Costa Verde to encounters with Brazilian black magic and of course the 4 days of Carneval where the city of Rio erupts into a Bacchanalian frenzy of dance, music and drinking. I am still in Brazil but have now departed the eclectic, vibrant city leaving behind some very special friends and taking with me some wonderful memories which this blog will be ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro February 11th 2011

Another blog update...another country! This time I am in Brazil. 8.5 million sq kms of country covering almost half of the continent of South America. Its big. Its big and at the moment it is very very hot. Too hot…even for me. If you want to see my pics so far, here is the link.....http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=329775&id=691995235&l=51e203d5d9 Rio was scorched yesterday under sunshine that took the mercury to 46 degrees celcius. Even the cariocas (the inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro) are struggling in temperatures this high. Its not just the heat it’s the humidity as well which leaches your will to live. No sooner do you step out of a cold shower feeling refreshed then your body acclimatizes back to the inferno and you start to sweat again. Im averaging 3 to 4 showers a day simply to ... read more

South America » Uruguay » East » Punta del Diablo February 5th 2011

Im sitting in a dingy, dark, windowless room with an overhead fan whirring and clunking above me in the town of Carmelo in Uruguay. I have left the security of Pepe in Buenos Aires and ventured across the muddy waters of the Rio Plata to yet another South American country. The place I am in, the Hotel Orientale is a dive…the cobwebs in the corner of the room are fluttering in the fan’s paltry breeze and I am unaware of any other guests. This hotel could be in The Shining! In fact, Hotel is an overly ambitious term for this establishment but the sheets are clean, there is nothing crawling (that I can make out) and having arrived in Carmelo from Tigre at dusk, I didn’t want to travel onwards into the night alone with no ... read more

Antarctica » Antarctica January 1st 2011

It’s the first day of 2011 and seeing in the New Year in Buenos Aires was an evening not to be forgotten. The last time i was away from the UK for New Year was the Millennium in Sydney. Last night, at Pepe’s, his daughter, ex–wife Anna and good friend Jorge came over and we sat down to eat the food we had all prepared at about 1030pm. Empanadas, salads, and a variety of meats. Laura, his performance-dance artist daughter had brought a projector and from the balcony of the apartment we beamed onto the opposite building’s wall images of fireworks, volcanoes erupting and my photos from Easter Island and Antarctica. (Eva...you looked amazing!). We also got a Banksy slideshow going projecting his works onto the wall (Arran...you were right, I was wrong. Admitted now in ... read more

South America December 17th 2010

Dear All Latest photos from the past week here for you to see http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=310762&id=691995235&l=6ea8780813 . Well, the day has come. After 1 week of chillin´ at the End of the World (El fin del Mundo), in an hour I board my boat...the Polar Pioneer (http://www.auroraexpeditions.com.au/ships/polar-pioneer ) to take me out to the open seas through the Beagle Channel and then where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans combine, through the stormy Drake Passage and onto the Antarctic Peninsula – a white wilderness. The weather is sunny and calm today and the winds not dramatic which suits me fine. I still shall be dosing myself up to the hilt with the strong Stugeron anti travel seasickness pills I have bought. The ocean is a fickle creature and having seen the Clelia II at the mercy of her waves ... read more

South America December 12th 2010

Evenings all Its a stormy night here in Punto Arenas...the stepping stone town from Patagonia across the waters to Tierra del Fuego. The rain is lashing down on the roof of the hostale, the Patagonian wind is relentless but the fires are stoked inside and i have a bed with a goose feather duvet to snuggle under. I almost had the opportunity to try beaver tonight (no pun intended) but the chance to upload pics using Linda's netbook and the fact the John Lennon tribute concert was on made me pass on this culinary adventure. Im sure there will be plenty more opportunities to eat beaver!! Anyway, at last...what you have all been waiting for... some photos from these past few weeks....enjoy... South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia December 11th 2010

Greetings all from Ushuaia ---- literally the end of the world. The archipelagos of the Beagle Channel are scattered around like croutons in a bowl of soup and then if you go far enough, the land literally just runs out on you… The mountainous peaks of Tierra del Fuego National park surround this isolated port which is as far South as a human can go (unless you get on a boat to Antarctica) and it sits in a concave scoop (a little like La Paz) enduring the gales and unpredictable weather mood changes of the region´s topography. I arrived a couple of days ago and have now parted company with my fellow Kumuka buddies, having endured two continuous days of 14 hours in the truck with a visit to the Otway Sound Penguin colony squashed in. ... read more
