July 31! Hi Hannah,
Today is the last day of July! Already! I caan hardly belive that we will be in the month of August tomorrow. I just got a chance to catch up to you in your postings, which I read aloud to your
Grandma. We are glad to learn that you are enjoying your trip and your new friends. By the way, EVERYONE has an "accent", even those, like you, who come from the Midwest in the U.S. Everyone thinks that national radio or television speech is without accent. Not really. It is different from many varieties of speech, largely by the absence of certain notable pronunciation or lexical features; so, therefore, it is still an "accent". Just as your new friends laughed at your speech, you could laugh at theirs as well. Different speech patterns, that's all.
Here at the cabin, the weather is perfect right now. And, of course, the water is perfect too. I am going down for a swim in a few minutes. We are having a very quiet time here. But yesterday was special. First, your Dad called. Then, your Aunt Lis called (just back from their week's stay in St. Maarten). Then, your Uncle Rob called (just back from his week's visit to Germany). Finally, we called your Aunt Sheila, just to hear her voice as well. So, for us, it was a good day. Today we will try to call your Uncle Ugo.
So, continue to enjoy your trip. Hope you get to see "Nessie" in Loch Ness!
Love you. Grandpa and Grandma
scotland music when you drive into scotland you should play mogwai's "how to be a werewolf" which has little to do with being a werewolf but lots to do with glorious instrumental music from a scottish band. have fun.
On Way Home Boo - cant wait to hear about Scotland. Love that country! Still trying to talk U Grant into moving there to open a bed & breakfast!! In New York now - trying to get to Chicago where our car is. Hope to be home late 2nite & see my babies. Can't wait to see your snaps from your trip!
What are you up to! Hi Boo - almost 10pm in Sint Maarten. Just had dinner & now we are going to other side of island to do some gambling. Hope we win - don't really care - its just fun!
Anything new to report on your travels? Or am I not getting the latest blogs? Love you! >^..^<
St Maarten WI-fi is spotty here. I'm afraid you did not get my birthday wish blogs. Hope you are having a grand time.
We are having a blast here - the island is beautiful - sunny every day so far. & the sound of the Carribean Sea right out my window - heaven!
Love you so much Boo!
I hope you are having a great time in the Carribean, I'm sure you are. I love you and thank you for the birthday wishes! I'm having a wonderful time. Tell Uncle Grant that I did have a few beers, but I didn't really pay much attention to what brand. Tell him I love him!

i'm here in germany visiting with jon erickson until the end of the month. happy 18th birthday. i hope that you're having a fun time, but judging from your posts it seems as though you are. i'll celebrate with you when you get back to the u.s.
Birthday British Style Uncle Grant wants to know if you hoisted a Guiness in the pub. Or perhaps a Black & Tan?
Sounds like you're having a grand time.
We are enjoying our 1st full day in St Maarten. Beautiful! Going to dinner & then off to feed the island kitties (yes - I bought cat food here!). Love you. Auntie Lis >^..^<
Happy Birthday! Yesterday you got to be 18 years old. How did that happen so fast? Happy birthday to you from Grandpa and Grandma. We hope you had a wonderful day.
On Friday evening we went to Music Hall on campus to see the Savoyards production of "The Pirates of Penzance," one of the most popular of Gilbert & Sullivan's operettas.
Yesterday we went out to Spring Green to see the matinee performance of "Richard III," one of Shakespeare's major history plays, at the American Players Theater there. Have you ever been there?
So we've had a busy weekend so far. Today, after church, we'll relax. And tomorrow we will head north to Three Lakes.
Love you. Enjoy your trip.
I love you too Grandpa and tell Grandma that I love her as well. It sounds like you both have been having a good time and doing a lot. I'm happy to hear that. I have been to the American Players Theatre a few times and I've always really enjoyed it. I'm doing very well, as you've gathered from my blog posts. I miss you and will see you when I return. Have a good time up north! Swim extra for me!
Hello Hannah! I have just finished reading your blog and enjoyed it immensely. Of course, since you are my beautiful granddaughter, I am a bit biased. So glad to learn that you arrived safely and that you've already begun your adventures. I think, from what you've written, that will enjoy your time with the Kirbys and that you and they will become fast friends. I look forward to reading about your trip in the days to come. We are going up north to our cabin on Monday and will stay for a month. I hope I can get connected up there. Love you. Grandma sends her love also. Grandpa
YAY I'm so excited for you! What an awesome experience you will have this gap year. It is a privilege that most Americans do not get to experience and I wish they could. Have a wonderful time, take lots of pictures, and thoroughly enjoy all this amazing world of ours has to offer!
Hello! My name is Hannah Scott and I am 18 years old and from Wisconsin, USA. During my senior year of high school, I decided that rather than dive right into higher education the following year, I would take a gap year to explore this beautiful world that we live in. I felt that I could not go into the next phase of my life without some "real world" experience under my belt. So the planning began. My friend, Katie McDowell, and I decided on a Human Rights Internship in Cape Town, South Africa. After making that decision, we built on it to create a whirlwind of a year. Our plans differ somewha... full info
