Hola amigos, Our next stop was the capitol city of Chile, Santiago. After a 12 hour bus ride from Pucon, we checked in to our hostel and then scoped out the neighbourhood we stayed in called Barrio Bellavista. This neighbourhood is jam packed with great restaurants, bars, and shopping. After laying low for our first day in the city, we picked up Allison at the airport the following day. We were able to stay at one of Santiago’s most popular hostels so it made for a great first hostel experience for Allison. The 3 of us spent the night out in an area of Barrio Bellavista called Patio Bellavista which was basically a square full of bars and places to eat. The area was well supervised and therefore popular with tourists especially. We had a great ... read more

South America » Chile » Araucanía » Pucón February 27th 2010

Hola amigos! Picking up where we left off.....following about 15hrs of busing broken up briefly by an overnight stay in a city called Valdivia we reached Pucon. Pucon is a super popular summer vacation spot for people from all over Chile but especially the capital city, Santiago. We had been promised sun and warm temperatures (AKA the complete opposite of the past 4 weeks). Unfortunately upon arrival, although not to our surprise, it was raining again (if I sound a bit worn down from the rain......it's because we were!). Like I said, since this is a super popular time of the year for Pucon, we spent a good chunk of time on arrival walking around in the rain looking for a hostel. After finally finding a place, luckily enough that ended up being a great hostel ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Futaleufu February 18th 2010

Hello again! Our next stop after our long stay in Puerto Natales was the small town of Futaleufu. We headed here for one reason only- white water rafting. After rafting in both Africa and Ottawa, both Laura and I were hooked and lucky for us, Futaleufu is consider anywhere from the 1st to 3rd best white water rafting location in the world depending on which list you are looking at. As I mentioned in the last blog, 25hr bus ride from Puerto Natales to Coyhaique was our first task. To our surprise, we actually traveled almost all 25hrs in Argentina! Because the south of Chile is so disjointed with islands, etc., north bound buses originating in Chile and going to other locations in Chile are required to use Argentinian roads. This was not an issue, it ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Puerto Natales January 29th 2010

Hola! We have crossed into Chile and are starting from the south and working our way up to the north of Chile. Our first stop is Puerto Natales, a small town on the coast that is the jumping off point for the main attraction...Torres Del Paine National Park. Considered South America´s premier National park, and one of the best trekking parks in the world, Torres Del Paine NP draws people from all over the world. There are 2 popular treks for this park: The Circuit and the W. We decided to do the W. As you´ll see from the picture of the map, the route forms the shape of a W, hence the name. The Circuit includes both the complete W route plus an additional 3 days trekking the backside of the moutains you see during ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate January 28th 2010

Hello again, As mentioned in the last post our next stop was El Calafate. People come here for the most part for one reason and that´s Perito Moreno Glacier. It´s considered to be the main attraction of Parque Nacional Los Glaciers, and our sole reason for stopping here. Basically, this glacier is unique for a few reasons, 1) it´s huge (not the biggest in the world, but huge nonetheless) measuring 30km long, 5km wide and 60m high 2) it moves alot- up to 2m per day which is tons for a glacier that size. That much movement means lots of huge pieces of ice calving off the glacier face daily (sometimes chunks the size of house which make huge splashes and small tidal waves after falling into the water). 3) it´s very low to sea-level making ... read more

Hi everyone! We survived our 33 hour bus ride from El Bolson with swollen feet (Dale: Laura needs ted stockings!), sore/cramped legs and serious bed head. Our next stop after our marathon bus ride was the small town of El Chalten. El Chalten is known for one thing, and one thing only, trekking! It´s considered the trekking capital of Argentina, and people come here mainly for 2 big attractions - Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy. Both of these mountains are fairly easily accessed by day hikes from the town center, and then more experienced climbers can actually scale the rock faces (obviously this was not for us). We decided to head towards Fitz Roy in the afternoon after arriving from El Bolson simply because the weather was improving and we didnt want to miss our ... read more

Hola! We reached El Bolson and decided to do a hike to a refugio, Cajon del Azul with the Danish couple. We got organized, had lunch and then made our way to the start of our trek. This hike was much less intense than our trek to Mount Tronador, but equally beautiful views. The hike goes up a mountain alongside this beautiful turquoise river. The water looks perfect for swimming, but is very cold! Nearing the refugio, there is water holes and rock face where you can swim, sun bathe, and just enjoy the views. It was just over 3 hours to the refugio where we set up camp. The refugio was a very quaint log home in a green field. The next morning, Mona and Jacob (the couple we were travelling with) introduced us to ... read more

Hey everyone, Thanks again for all your comments, its great to see that people are enjoying the blog and following our adventure! After Mendoza, we headed into Patagonia region, first stop, Bariloche! The drive was beautiful through Patagonia´s Lake District, turquoise waters, mountains and rolling terrain. We arrived in Bariloche and stepped off the bus into surprisingly different weather. It was our first introduction to Patagonian winds and quite a temperature difference from the 40 degree weather in Mendoza! Bariloche is a beautiful town - situated right on a lake, with mountain back drop and the entire town on a hill facing these incredible views. We stayed at a great hostel, Hostel 1004, which was on the 10th floor and overlooking the lake. That day we walked around uptown (discovering that this area is famous for ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza » Mendoza January 7th 2010

Hey again! We finished 4 days in Mendoza...wine country! We understand now why everyone loves this place. It is beautiful with tree lined streets and many parks. There is so much to do here - extreme sports, wine tours, mountaineering, shopping etc etc. Our first day we walked to Plaza Indepencia in the center of the city and Aristides Villanueva street where there is many bars and shops. Last we walked around one of the park areas where many people were running and biking along the trails...in 38 degree weather! That night we went out for supper to a place called Sofia (thai food). It was an incredible restaurant, very cool looking and the food was amazing. We shared a bottle of wine to celebrate being in wine country and I (Laura) was pretty well drunk ... read more

Before we begin: We wrote this nearly a week ago now but have just published it because of our biggest mistake packing for our trip- not bringing a netbook (small laptop). It has become increasingly difficult to find a) a free computer at our hostels long enough to upload photos and b) a computer that is functioning well enough to upload the photos in the first place! So....you´ll have to be patient. I realize most people enjoy the photos more than the text so I don´t want to post blog entries with no photos. We appreciate you guys reading the posts. We put quite a bit of effort into writingpreparing them (as does Ben if you´re following his blog) but we enjoy doing it. Sometimes, it´s just a bit of a wating game when you don´t ... read more
