The next day Gina and I make the trek by foot out of the Old Quarter, west to the Ho Chi Minh Museum, the Mausoleum and the Presidential Palace. If you’ve ever done this walk you’ll know that you pass by some of serious Government ministry buildings guarded by earnest young soldiers sporting arms. They look serious but as you approach them for directions, they grin and point a way down the road. Occasionally I get a salute. We are about half an hour late for the mausoleum – I say we are late because it is 30 minutes after opening time and the queue stretched for hundreds of metres. It takes a fair bit of time to get into the compound – all in single file after being searched a number of times and all ... read more

Our first full day in Hanoi is Sunday, and as most of the significant monuments are closed on Monday, we decide to head out to Halong Bay the next day. The weather is quite mild at this time of the year (15 to 18 degrees with mist, haze and light showers), so we decide to limit the trip to just an overnight on a junk. We find an AsianaTravelMate office and book the deluxe trip on the Calypso Cruiser - quite an exotic name for what the boat turns out to be. We start our first day we a tour of the Old Quarter. Its a fascinating rabbit warren of little streets, each one specialising in a particular ware whether it be buttons, musical instruments, catering equipment or in the case of the street we were ... read more

With Ellen and Alex back, the last full day of our stay at Phong Nha is a trip out to Paradise Cave. I did this tour on a previous visit to Phong Nha on the back of Ben's motorbike and had an incredible time. I was really keen to share the experience with Gina and Ellen. I think that Ben sensed this and so he left the scheduling of this tour until Ellen and Alex had returned from their trek to Hang Em. Knowing that this tour would be the peak of the visit to Phong Nha was great but I was a bit trepidatious at the thought that we would have to do it on scooters albeit in a group. Ben sometimes rolls out a minivan for these tours but our group size was too ... read more

I have to confess now - Phong Nha is my favorite place in Vietnam. The natural beauty of the national park, in particular the caves is unrivalled and the recent wartime history provides another edge to the place. Everyone I meet that is thinking of going to Vietnam I urge to visit here. Unfortunately Lonely PLanet have also picked up on the place and have the listed both the national park and the farmstay in their top ten lists of places to go to in the recently published edition. The area is already the second most visited place for local tourists - LP featuring it will mean a crush of foreigners. Tthere goes the neighbourhood! When we arrived the previous evening we were graciously recieved by the owners of the farmstay - aussie Ben and his ... read more

We arrived in Hoi An the previous day and settled into a hotel located midway between the old town and the long beach that stretches from Danang in the north to Cua Dai beach near Hoi An. Danang was used by the Americans as a place of R&R during the war, with thousands of servicemen using the beach during short break away from the front. Its not surprising to see people here that are darkly coloured or who have curly hair, the result of liaisons with the locals. Hoi An town itself is a UNESCO heritage site and a great example of what an important trading port of the 16 and 17th century looked like. The quaint two story buildings (2 storey because of annual floods) with their distinct style and faded colour are a huge ... read more

After saying goodbye to Kevin, the blind albino Irishman, Gina and I head for a stroll to Saigon's Fine Arts Museum. On the way we stop at a kerbside cafe for coffee. No matter how small or how grand the setting, you are always guarranteed a good cup of coffee in Saigon. Whether its straight black or with a shot of condensed milk or over ice when heat of the day is about, the coffee is good, strong and caramelly. The Viet serve their coffee in a small tin pot that sits on top of the cup or glass you will actually drink the coffee from, with the pot acting as a percolator for the coffee. The Fine Arts Museum was a disappointment. Two buildings holding a very sad collection of works, most of it drab ... read more

The first couple of days in Saigon are spent as a means of getting reacquainted with the place as well as a couple of chores. First off is a trip to our tailors, Cao Vinh in Pasteur street. Pleasingly they remember us from previous visits. They aren't cheap but do very good work. I arrange a suit for a friend and Gina picks our some material for them to tailor into a full length blouse. The suit is for Baz, who has accompanied us to the tailor in previous years. They have his measurements on file and he swears he hasn't shifted an inch since the last visit - it could be an expensive punt as the dark brown cashmere material I pick out is top of the rack. We arrange to come back in a ... read more

After thrashing about tieing up all the necessities for a long vacation - bills paid in advance, farewelling all our family and friends and making sure that Sarah is settled into our house - its with some relief that we arrive at Tullamarine airport for our departure. The whole family - Gina and I, Sam and Ellen - are departing on the same flight but will eventually go seperate ways, Ellen and Sam staying for quite lengthy tours of up to 9 months. Ellen will be joined by schoolmate Alex a couple of days into our visit to Vietnam for the first month of her trip. Well thats the plan but we don't have return tickets so anything could happen. After arriving in KL, Sam and travelling mate Nick, leave us and head for Cambodia. Gina, ... read more
