28th June: We were pleased to arrive at Longreach today - unfortunately our impression of Emerald was somewhat coloured by our noisy neighbours. Having unhitched the van and set up camp, we headed downtown for provisions. 29th June: Spent almost the entire day in the QANTAS pioneers museum. It was very well done - we only bought the basic $19 package (for extra money you can do wing walks and have tours of a 707 and a 747). There were a number of short audio-visuals with aviation pioneers (or their descendants) talking about their exploits, some good aircraft displays (including the original QANTAS hangar, design, building and office), and a couple of very good movies: one was the restoration of a 707 in Southend, UK and its return to Australia, and the other featured Hudson Fysh ... read more

Cloncurry Country

3rd - 4th July: After arriving in Cloncurry and having a look around yesterday afternoon, we decided it’s a very pleasant town, and since the camping ground is shady and quiet, we’ve booked for an extra night. After stocking up in Woolworths this morning, went for a walk from the campground out the back entrance. The road quickly became dirt, but very pleasant walking, and with a few gentle hills for a change. The landscape here is quite different from Longreach, with rocky outcrops and some large, stony almost-mountains. The walk took us out to a mining area (unfortunately we couldn’t actually get inside the perimeter fence to see the mine, but we could hear it!). The mine is called the Great Australia. Not sure if this is the original Great Australia copper mine discovered by ... read more

25th June: With the sore knee AND the reasonably heavy rain that fell overnight, a day of rest seemed to be in order. The knee now feels much better, and the sun came out this afternoon. We spent the day just lazing about, reading, looking at my new guitar instruction books and doing some of my cat alphabet cross-stitch sampler which I only ever do when travelling (started in 1996 in Bundaberg!). Only 12 letters to go! So hopefully the big walk will be on tomorrow. We hope to come back to Carnarvon Gorge on another trip - it really is beautiful, with wallabies, kangaroos and many birds visiting the camping area. It’s a full moon tonight, and I’m sure if you knew where to look along the river bank just below the campsite, you’d see ... read more

Tight Entry

Oceania » Australia » Queensland June 24th 2010

Travelled from Roma on near-empty highways, turning onto even more empty main roads (serving the cattle and mining industries). The last 15kms of the road off to Carnarvon Gorge is dirt (in pretty good condition so long as not wet) with several river crossings - a little bit of water over the road at each one. Not quite as challenging as the Gibb River Road and some of the Kimberley tracks! Beautiful camping ground here (at $41 a night in advance, it should be!) but not much outside-world contact with no mobile signal at all and just a couple of pay phones. Wireless internet is available but at $3/15 minutes we decided not to indulge, even though desperate to know what happened with the deposing (?de-throning) of Kevin Rudd. We only discovered it had happened when ... read more
