After a quick 45 minute flight to Hanoi airport from Viantiene, compared to the 26 hour bus, I stepped out into noticeably cooler air and soon found the airport shuttle which takes people the 30km into town for a measley $2. My first taste of Hanoi and Vietnam traffic came as somewhat of a shock and it wasnt long before I was cowering behind my backpack wondering how on earth we were going to make it into town alive and also how anyone still had their driver's licence in this country. There appeared to be no rules on the road other than 1. You are not allowed to use your brakes at any point 2. Indicators are to be replaced by the use of the horn and 3. Cross roads and T-Junctions are not places to ... read more

I set off from Luang Prabang on a minivan with the Danish girls for the 6 hour journey down to the party capital of Laos, Vang Vieng. Everyone on the minivan was soon introduced and I got some gambling going by getting everyone to chuck in some cash for a pot to guess the correct arrival time. The journey was a slow one as we wound through the dramatic mountain roads of Northern and Central Laos. Steep drops off to the side down the hill sides kept me awake, as did the seemingly endless number of overtakes performed by our driver on blind corners with nothing between us and a long drop off the side. I can only think that the driver was trying to get us in the right frame of mind to arrive in ... read more

After a fairly restless night, I was up early and decided to some exercises out the front of the guesthouse with a view of the Mekong winding away from me. The Sun slowly crept up above the hills and a cool morning soon began to warm up. After a light breakfast we packed up and headed back down to the pier to catch the boat which we were told would be at 8:30. The day before, 2 boats had brought us all down from the border but now the boatmen seemed to think that we would be able to cram everyone onto 1. Fortunately we were one of the first on as other people had been told the boat left at 10. We managed to get seats near the back again but this time there was ... read more

After the several cocktails the night before, a relaxing day was definitely in order and was pleasantly surprised to discover I had slept till nearly 10. Another excellent muesli and fruit breakfast was followed up by doing what most backpackers to SE Asia do....catch up on what was happening at the Cheltenham Festival! I sat in the guesthouse garden and watched all the main races from the first two days, though I may have got a little carried away and received some funny looks from the Latvian girls when I started cheering Sprinter Sacre up the hill.....god know what will happen if Kauto is in with a chance when I finally manage to see the Gold Cup! After spending a few hours chilling out and sending some emails, I decided that I should go for my ... read more

As Richie Benaud (12th Man version anyway!) would say.....Another stinking, fu**ing hot day here in Bangkok, 36C with more moisture than David Boon's jock strap after a full day's batting. Managed to sleep a lot better last night and woke at 8. Had another day to kill in Bangkok before I headed for the train station to catch the 6:15 to Chiang Mai. Decided some exercise would help wake me up so hit the hotel gym for a quick beach muscles session before heading down to the restaurant to gorge on the excellent breakfast again. There seemed to be a lot of giggling coming from the waitressing staff as they watched me devour a plate of fruits and cold meats before asking for 3 poached eggs on toast to go with my bacon and potatoes. Had ... read more

So it was finally here, March 10th! Didn't exactly get off to the best start, what with waking up in the wrong house, waking the Burton's neighbours up with the alarm and having a cracking hangover! Made it home though, collected the bags and got a lift into Leeds with James. Soon made it over to Victoria for a few beers with the uni gang, great to see everyone before I left, especially with all the kids in tow. A few drinks saw the hangover off and I felt much better as I headed to the tube. First transport issue came before I even left the country as had to go to Paddington to get the Heathrow Express as the Picadilly line was down. Still on time though and got checked in, even turned down a ... read more
