In 1957, I was in the US Air Force and was sent to Japan for two years. I really enjoyed looking at their culture, their art, their way of living.
Later, when I started teaching English in Michigan, I persuaded students to travel to Europe to compare the European culture with the US culture. Each summer for more than 20 years, I took groups to Europe, and each time, we all learned something new. For example, the last time we visited the Vatican, we were allowed to visit the archeological dig going on underground way below the Vatical main floor. Scary? Yes. But it points out the many new ways we can learn about another culture. Now, we are recruiting retirees to join us to look at the "Old World."
