:) a very very beautiful story, not to mention the photos. I am albanian too from tetovo, Macedonia, but i have never been in Albania! Hope i'll go this year. Many thanks!
I'm not sure where you got George from; my name is David. Or Donny. Anyway, in Bujumbura I stayed at Saga Beach. It was quite pricey (about $30) because it catered for UN Peacekeepers but it's all I could find. You will have no problems finding food; there are lots of restaurants and roadside kebabs are good. Regarding what to brace yourself for, it's hard to say because I was there in February 2007. The situation changes weekly so I would try to get some advice once in Rwanda. I'm sure you'll have a great trip, it's a fantastic part of the world.
I am Travelling to Burundi Hey George,
I am traveling to Bujumbura and it is my first time, what should I brace for? Any ideas about cheap but safe hotels? How much is the lowest rate? What should I plan for the food. I am traveling from Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo then come back to Bujumbura and fly out from their to Belgium.
Hi Jodi
Costa Rica is a great place to live and work but you will be fairly poor if you rely on what you earn alone. I worked at a private language school that I found by searching on google and it was pretty easy work. I earnt about $6 per hour and worked 20-26 hours a week. This was enough to live ok and have a nice apartment but when I travelled the money usually had to come from savings. You can earn much better money by working at an international school but I prefer to teach adults. Good luck.
Hi,
I am researching Teach Abroad options and over the last couple weeks I have been zoning in on Costa Rica. I have a few questions that I would love your thoughts on if you have any time...
- My boyfriend and I are planning to travel together. Do you think/know if it will be difficult for us to get job placements close to one another? We don't need or necessarily want to work at the same school, but we do want to live together.
- Where did you find your job? Did you go through a particular program?
- I've read that CR schools are typically very poor, at least the public ones. Do you find that your salary is sufficient for a conservative to comfortable lifestyle? Do you work in a public, private, or international school? Do you recommend any of the three?
Thank you so much!
thank you! i just want to say thank you because i am planning to go to Nigeria to meet some people i've meet about two years ago now. but must admitt i don't hear a lot of good stories from their. so this was good to know, even with the ocasional warnings here and there it sounds like a decent place somewhat...lol.. thank you!
Getting to know the "real" country "However, when you travel in the more popular places you tend to meet only other foreigners and miss out on meeting locals who often provide the most memorable experiences of any trip. "
Yes, indeedy!!!
Thank you I found your entry "fair and balanced" (and I am not comparing you with FNC) especially when you describe this beautiful country and its people.
I'm Salvadoran, I live in El Salvador (actually I have lived in San Salvador all of my life, sharing this "honor" with about 2 million people more). I am not sure if my country is the most dangerous in the world as it is depicted (I will not argue about it, it's a nonsense for me).
I know there are zones in the metropolitan area that I would never visit unless I decide to have some kind of Dr. Kevorkian assistance for suicide. However this is true f for many others cities in Latin America and around the world (NYC before Giuliani?).
As I said, I don't know if it is the most dangerous, but I do know it's beautiful, and I agree with David that it's worth to visit. We have a very small area, meaning that you can visit beaches, arqueological places, lakes, mountains, colonial towns, traveling distances <= 100 miles in all directions. I'm glad you enjoy your visit, hope you come back some day.
Camino anthology I am collecting camino stories for an anthology I hope to have published later this year. Do you have any to share? Before, during, after: on the road, off the road: angels, demons, strange-but-true: coincidences, serendipity: wonderful people, characters etc etc.
You can send them to sillydoll (at) gmail (dot) com. If you add your name, you will be given credit for the story.
un abrazo,
Sil
The Compostela Donny wrote "the Compostela (the one way express boarding ticket to heaven"
The Compostela is merely a 'tourist' document, designed in the 1950's, based on a 14th C document in Latin. The "ticket to heaven" would be an INDULGENCE given to those who arrive at the cathedral, confess, attend mass, make a donation etc. One does not have to walk to Santiago to earn an indulgence but you do have to walk 100km - from any direction - to earn the Compostela. If you are not walking for a religious reason, you can request an alternative document - even prettier than the Compostela.

@@@ You're killing me dude! I truly enjoyed your descriptive informative and hilarious blog. Thanks for informing peops about the detrimental effects that the cosumption of the stuff has on other people and for being considerate to others. I would also like to add that you are more likely to find drugs in areas that backpackers frequent because there are people that go there just to buy it, but while walking the streets you won't see it any more or less than anywhere in the world. People have to go to shady areas to buy it just like anywhere else.
When I started this blog in 2007, it was more of a highlights package of trips generally focusing on one place or aspect. My rule had been one blog per country unless I lived there, but I eventually realised that fewer blogs were appearing. Having got around quite a bit, I'm now revisiting many countries. It's getting trickier to get to completely new countries so I might break that rule on occasion. The PhD fortunately didn't curtail travelling with research in sub-Saharan Africa and India as well as the chance to attend conferences with a sneaky bit of travelling tacked on before or after th... full info
