Asia » Laos January 20th 2003

Possibly the most beautiful and tranquil place I've ever been and definitely the kindest and gentlest people I have ever met, Laos was nothing short of amazing at every step. Jan 22 2003 Ramblin around old Indochine, looking and feeling in wonder, taking it all in, sucking it up through the bendy-top rainbow-striped straw of my soul. Too much to say in symbols, too much to experience beyond my reactive thoughts and emotions. One in six billion, one in the infinity of the universe. Nothing. Nothing but the overimportance I give to my own beingness, as if it were mine, as if their was an owner. Coming back to Thailand was a relief, a relief for my sore butt and dust clogged lungs. Back to smooth paved roads and the wonderful funky japanese rainbow buses from ... read more

After returning from the remote jungles of northern Cambodia, a 3 day journey on horrid roads, sick with fever and diarrhea, thinking I was going to die, I arrived in Siem Reap and got some antibiotics to finally kick my recurring Ghiardia. I then spent three amazing days exploring the mind-blowing temples of Angkor Wat. From there it was anotger horrible day's journey on shit roads for an intense return back to Thailand... Nov 28 2002 Left it I did, my guitar, at the Cambodian border. I gave it, indeed, to one of the many begging Cambodian girls who followed me around the border area and shaded me with an umbrella as I walked. No matter how awkwardly I turned or how fast I walked those little girls kept their little friggin umbrellas directly over my ... read more

This is part one of Cambodia. I arrived in Cambodia with a friend a few days after christmas. The travel companion did not work out and I was on my own again. I spent a lot of time talking with young monks almost everywhere I went. I ended up getting sick after my night with the Cambodian Army. Travel was extremely uncomfortable and every where you went you were harassed by touts. Luckily I witnessed no violence and most people were extremely kind. Jan 15 2003 Clouds of dust and temple must, lungs clogged by the red fog stirred up by vehicles traveling on rural cambodia roads, which are more like sandy trails, rock piles and craters. I was out in some remote territory after the sterile capital of Phnom penn and now Im in the ... read more

After the first adobe building project, I attended a meditation retreat in Southern Thailand. I then headed back up to the Northeast and helped with another building project. After that I spent christmas on an island in the gulf of Thailand with some friends before heading to Cambodia. Nov 26 2002 Hello everyone, Well I’m still alive and breathing thinking feeling here on planet earth. I’m in transit from the building project to the Cambodian border and onto a meditation retreat in southern Thailand. I’m too sick to write more. I believe I’m experiencing another recurrence of Giardia. Other than that things are good. Love you all, Steve Nov 28 2002 Left it I did, my guitar, at the Cambodian border. After my beach vacation in the south, I met up with an organic farmer named jo. I had planned to work on his farm, but instead volunteered with him, working on various adobe building projects. The first was in Chaiyaphum province in the northeast. We were building an entire village for a group of farmers who had been displaced from their land by a government dam. Nov 4 2002 Hello all, Here is yet another mass e-mail from this crazy fool. So I made it to Malaysia after my month of roaming the south and watching my bowels change their consistency and frequency in a chaotic patternless manner. Yes I saw about two minutes of Malaysia, leaving Thailand, entering Malaysia and coming right back. It was a ridiculous process of routine paperwork, but indeed, I got ... read more

In the fall of 2002 I flew from San Francisco to Bangkok, where I spent 5 months wandering around and being an idiot. I spent time in Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. The most worthwhile thing I did while there was help different groups of people build adobe buildings, giving me the chance to get off the tourist trail and into remote regions where I could have real interactions with the natives. Other highlights included getting sick, puting myself in danger, and exploring Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Also, everything about Laos was delightful, despite witnessing the destruction caused by America's bombing during the Vietnam War. (People are still severely wounded on a regular basis from unexploded cluster bomblets.) After Losing my mind in Bangkok I hopped on a train and slowly made my way to Malaysia over ... read more

North America » United States » California » Big Sur May 1st 2002

This is the first of my installation of old travel blogs, before I blogged. I am posting all the emails I sent and the best of my digital photography(I got my digital camera while in Big Sur). The writing is bad, but I hope, at least it is interesting. In the spring of 2002 I biked down the Pacific Coast from Portland to Big Sur, where I worked for 5 months. I did the ride in four weeks, with a week spent in San Francisco. I took the MAX from downtown Portland to Hilsboro, Pedaled Rte. 6 to Tilamook, then rode Hwy. 101 all the way to Leggett, CA, where Hwy 1 begins. These are the sophmoric emails I sent on the trip. All my photos from the ride are in non digital format, so all ... read more
