The reason we endured such a struggle in getting to Siem Reap was for the splendor of Angkor! This gigantic ancient architectural site dates back, in places, to the 5th century. At its peak in the 12th century, Angkor was the heart of the Khmer empire, which spanned from what is now southern Vietnam to Sukhothai in Thailand. Despite the fact that the locals never forgot this place and regularly paid their respects to the temples, the French “discovered” Angkor in 1860, gradually restored and conserved it.
