South America » Peru » Lima July 20th 2007

I am now back in the capital of Peru, Lima. The city is kind of like Seattle, even though I have never been there. The reason I say it's similar to Seattle is because of the constant hazy overcast. During the past three days I have been here so far, there has only been like 4 hours of actual sunlight. Kind of depressing. But the city is actually really cool. Most of the towns and cities I have been to so far have had a distinct lack of wealth, yet still retained an element of charm. Lima, at least the parts I have been to so far, is very cosmopolitan and sophisticated. There are many upper end restaurants, shopping, and homes. So I am in serious pain as I type this. Well, I exaggerate a bit. ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno July 15th 2007

I am currently writing from the lakeside town of Puno. The lake I am referring to is Lake Titicaca. Hee, hee, hee; Titicaca. Anyway a few days I was the beginning of I pretty series of events for your intrepid traveler. The subject heading is in context of riding "bitch" on a motorcycle. Yep, I arrived at the Cusco airport in the morning without problems. In a packaged tour like mine, a person is generally waiting for you by the arrival gates with your name on a sign. Well, that didn't happen for me this time. Not right away at least. I had to wait for like a half an hour before this dude comes up to me and asks my name. Finally, it's my guide. He then proceeds to tell me to wait for a ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa July 10th 2007

I'm sucking air that is. I am currently in Peru's second largest city, Arequipa. I can't remember the city's elevation, but it is pretty damn high. Which is why they serve that coca tea; it's supposed to help with the symptoms of altitude sickness. Yesterday, I went to Colca Canyon. On the trip there, we reached like 12,000 feet up. Just prior to that I really felt it because I was totally light-headed. And I was also starting to get a headache. Lucky for me that was it. I heard of stories of others who were throwing up or even worse, sent to the hospital. I did make it okay to my final destination of Chivay, a tiny town near the base of the canyon. Later that evening I walked down to the market, which was ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa July 7th 2007

For those of you who don't know, I am in Peru. Arequipa to be exact. And yes the subject heading is a reference to Mr. Richard Gere who supposedly stuck a guinea pig up his... well I'm sure you know the rest. Yes, I ate cuy chotado (roasted guinea pig) tonight for dinner. I can't say it was all that good. It's wasn't bad or anything. It was just gamy. I've never had anything gamy before, but I imagine that's what guinea pig taste like. Now, when I was eating dinner for second time tonight (crema de tomate) gazing upon the wedding party leaving the cathedral and the people hanging out in the main plaza area, that whole thing about Richard Gere and his guinea pig experience popped into my mind. Also with my yummy tomato ... read more

North America » Mexico » Jalisco » Guadalajara July 27th 2006

July 27, 2006 It's good to be typing on a normal keyboard again. And fitting in with crowds of Asians (I love my yellow peeps). Yep I am now writing to you from Los Angeles, California, United States. I got back to Phoenix on Monday afternoon. I hung out with Robert for a little while, since he picked me up from the airport, had lunch, then quickly departed for L.A. I got here around 9:30 in the evening, so it wasn't too bad. The bad part was that there's a horrible heat wave here. I was dying that first night. Well, I should say that because a lot of people have actually died in California from the heat. I had gotten spoiled from the nice Guadalajara weather. The other thing I really miss is the skin ... read more

North America » Mexico » Jalisco » Guadalajara July 22nd 2006

July 22, 2006 So last night the Puerto Rican dude, Korean dude, and Austrian chick, and I hung out last drinking. I had more to drink last night than I have in a long while, which is kind of weird considering in a foreign city with three almost complete strangers. Oddly, though, I had a blast with them last night. We first went to this outdoor place in the one of the plazas that had singers singing traditional Mexican songs. After a couple of beers there, we split a cab and left downtown for another part of the city. The next place we ended up was called Bariachi. It was this pretty big, kind of upscale club with a full set mariachi band onstage. The music and atmosphere were pretty cool, but the service sucked. We ... read more

July 21, 2006 So after school today, I went to a local mall, El Centro Magno. It was nothing spectacular. But I took a local bus to get there. It kind of adds up taking the taxi every time because it is around $3-5 a ride depending on where you go obviously. So after my visit to the mall, I took the bus back to school. The buses here are kind of crazy, just like it is I´m sure it is everywhere else in the world. They have all kinds of buses going down the same street, so you have to make sure you get on the right one or else you might end up in the next town. They also tend to be very crowded, so you have to make sure you put on some ... read more

North America » Mexico » Jalisco » Guadalajara July 18th 2006

July 18,2006 Sorry I haven't written in a while. I've obviously been having fun here in Guadalajara, but I haven't been getting much sleep. As a have said before, my hotel was built built around the time Lincoln died. The president, not the car. So the design sucks and I can hear the front gate shut and close, as well as anyone talking in the lobby. The worst part probably is the bed (la estupida cama). As you may know, I prefer my beds how I like my women: soft, comforting, pliable, and needs turning once every few months. The bed in this hotel is hard as a rock. I'd probably be better off sleeping on the sidewalk. Seriously, they should sent the mattresses to Iraq, so our soldiers can use them for armor. I haven't ... read more

North America » Mexico » Jalisco » Guadalajara July 13th 2006

July 13, 2006 Dammit this Mexican made keyboard sucks because some of the keys are off. The left shift key is further off to the left, and they have this ç, and this ñ, and this ^, and this ¬. What the hell are those¿ Okay its like after midnight here, I´m drinking a bohemia, there is some dude talking to the front desk clerk behind me, it just rained really hard and I´m sitting in a kind of covered courtyard, and just tonight a transexual asked me if I wanted a b.j. I politely declined saying no, gracias, and walked off as fast as my little yellow legs could carry me. I´m pretty sure it was one, as I have never met one in person before. Ah, fun times. It seems like I´ve been here ... read more
