Tom and I stayed two nights with families. One night was at a home/guesthouse outside Bangkok called "The Thai House". It was built entirely of teak about 19 years ago, and the family hosts up to 8 guests, providing dinner and breakfast, plus beautiful, though un-airconditioned, rooms. We shared two unisex bathrooms with showers. At dinner, everyone wore a sarong -- even Tom. The second night was at a farm in Cambodia. The farmer and his wife (she's 60, he's 70) have turned their little farm into a home-stay compound. The buildings are simple, pretty much animal shelter-style, all two story. On the first floor of our building was the outdoor kitchen and the second bedroom building sheltered two cows and a calf. The folks there reported that it was pretty aromatic.
