Saturday was a trip to the Equator line, about an hour and a half outside of Quito, and vey crowded public buses. The first bus we took was one of the extra long 'accordion' buses. According to the sign on the bus, it's capacity was 42 seated, 118 standing! Third World for you, everyone takes the bus, few get a seat. Did manage to get one on the second bus, though, as we got on on the first stop. A number of people got on and off again as the journey progressed, selling Catholic blessing cards, candies, snacks. There was also a blind beggar who was singing along to a portable radio, somewhat off-key. While we were there they were in the midst of repainting everything, so looked good! Only complaint was the gas tank running out during our stay... Cold showers! Most of the first day was ... read more

After three flights, two buses, a ferry, and a taxi. ride, it was roughly 8:45 or nearabouts when I finally checked into our hostel, Casa Helbling, in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Sister and mum rode with me on the bus out to the ferry, to see me off. When we got on the bus, Mum proudly announced to the bus driver 'She's going to Ecuador!" The driver asked incredulosly, to which she replied "Because she can!". A girl overhead this and came up to me on the ferry to chat about it. Turned out she was on her way to Indonesia so I gave her some tips on Bali. Went when I was ten, so couldn't ... read more
