Pottery Village
The expert potter Sorry everybody, this blog is dated 28th September and a lot has happened in the last 10 days and just managing some time to catch up on things.......we are all fit and well but a little tired and worn out after all the cleaning up we have done here and there is still a lot more to do here......but for now enjoy this update and more to come........tks. Ros.
I have a bit of spare time today because the storm that hit the Phillipines is heading our way and we have all been advised to stay close to our hotel for the day. Lifestart Foundation decided to close down for the day and I was all prepared for my first English lessons - but tomorrow is another day.....
There is a small pottery industry about 5km from HoiAn which we paid a visit to one afternoon. It was a thriving area once but is now very small. We were fortunate enough to come across an elderly couple and their daughter who kindly invited us into their 'potting' shed and home to show us around.
A few of us had a go at the potting wheel - some more

Stacking the pottery to dry successfully than others - I was quiet surprised at how much I enjoyed the experience - maybe I have never been relaxed enough to feel the clay etc. I was doing really well until they handed me the piece of wire to cut the clay pot off from the wheel and I slipped and cut off a section on the top of my pot.......good one Ros.
All us Aussies felt soo big and clumsy against this little old Vietnamese woman who squatted soo easily and made very small fine pots and lids.......I was all legs and feet trying to get up from the wheel. It was a lovely visit and walk around the area. We were proudly shown all the items them product and some purchases were made.....they made some great pottery items (lanterns, little house, insect) that we have seen in restaurants here with colored lights inside them and they are very effective.
They also make thousands of those little pottery whistles that the kids sell on the street every day and night.....they are very cheap...some are glazed and others are not......the glazed ones are a better to use as they don't take a layer of skin off your

Merri under instruction lip like the unglazed ones when you use them.
Very hot and rain again that night....seems to come up about 5pm most nights.
On Sunday we took a trip to Danang about 35kms away but takes about 1hr to get there by car. One of the girls on reception here at our hotel has taken an interest in us and she is fantastic. Sunday was her day off and she took us to Danang for some shopping.......goodies for the orphanage that is close to us......but that is another story and I will tell you more about as Michael and Merri are down there at the moment doing an interview and taking photos.
Tina (our receptionist) took us to the Museum in Danang and it was great for us as it houses a lot of relics and information about the Champa's and especially monuments that have been saved from the My Son area. So that visit really 'finished off' the My Son experience for us all.
