A happy 39th at the Sailing Club
Our elite drinking brigade pulled out all the stops and again lead by Captain Conor Brennan, despite extreme fatigue in the face of alcohol. We all spent my 39th birthday nursing nasty hangovers on the 1 p.m. train from Danang to Nha Trang. Conor had the bright idea of getting a few cans to ease the pain and thazt sorted us out for a few hours, but we eventually followed the girls and conked out. It was bucketing down on arrival and we jumped in a taxi and headed straight to the Perfume Grass Inn. This is a slightly expensive but cozy and friendly place, near all the nightspots and the beach. Despite the downpour and our fatigue we headed down to the Sailing Club for a bite to eat and a quiet birthday celebration involving cocktails and the like until the establishment shut down in the wee hours.
Nha Trang is the main diving resort in Vietnam and it was Kelly and Conor's plan to do their advanced padi certs here. Our somewhat more modest ambition to take a boat trip for a day was constantly hampered by the threat of rain every morning. This resulted in us just walking the (filthy) beach as far as La Louisiane and renting a lounger for 20,000 dong to avoid the hawkers that bothered everyone. What

I should be charging for all the autographs I give out over Asia, but if they found out I was only a poor copy then they would cook me and serve me up! was delicious was the really cheap seafood cooked and sold by the local women on the beach. So all-in-all apart from this activity or lack of, the rest of the time in this town was spent going out to bars like Crazy Kim's and restaurants like Cyclo, downing buckets of cocktails as it bucketed down outside - not very cultural, I know ....
