The scene for our Xmas Eve 2004
Hi all,

I'm glad to report that we are both fine here in Vietnam. Probably like
most of you we have been glued to the TV watching the tragic scenes from
South East Asia. Luckily, we don't think we know of any backpackers who
we met that were going to be in the Phuket or Phi Phi area.

Phi Phi island seems to have been completely destroyed so it looks like
we won't be going there afterall, although we will see what the situation
is in South Thailand when we get there next month.

We left Nah Trang last Friday (Xmas Eve) and got a shortish bus ride to
Mui Ne (pronounced Mwee Nay). We had booked ahead to a nice resort with
a swimming pool and which is right on the beach. Lovely Villa room with
a sea view balcony for $35 a night......Mui Ne ain't cheap!

Mui Ne consists literally of 1 road that runs parallel to the 10km long
beach, and our place was towards one of the ends. So after 3 nights there
we moved to a more central place. Most of the resorts in the centre were
full for Xmas but we

Our Xmas Day transport.....very 50's...!
found a place that was new and only open 2 weeks !
Did a bit of haggling on the room rate as the place was empty and got the
room for $42 a night. Place is amazing and we have the pool and beach area
almost to ourselves !

2nite will be our last night here as our budget can't take much more of
this big spending, so we will get the bus to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) tomorrow.
We are trying to arrange to meet up with a few fellow travellers there for
New Years, and no doubt the bity will be buzzing anyway!

To sum up: we have sat in the sun for 6 days.........Saigon will be a massive
change to the sedate pace of life here!

Hope you all have a great last night of 2004 wherever you are, from the
Roselawn Inn to Melbourne!

Slán,

Phil

Mui Ne
Looks like you had a good deal in Mui Ne! There is a good site at http://www.muinebeach.net that lists all the sites, accommodations, news etc. for that area. Kiteboarding and water sports are really taking off in Mui Ne now too. They just had a big tourism festival (Oct 2005) for the province's 10th anniversary for tourism. Beautiful place!
