The next day we woke up feeling a little worse for ware and made sure we made the most of our 12pm check out time. The we left our stupidly heavy backpacks with reception while we went to have some lunch. At 3pm we caught the bus to a place called Mui Ne Beach, which we had been tipped off about by a lad from London when we were in Cambodia. Basically the weather forecast looked good, it had a decent beach and plenty of affordable hotels with a nice pool. Now was time to relax.
We arrived in Mui Ne about 8pm and checked into our hotel. It was £27 per night, the most we'd paid for accommodation since we've been away but we fancied somewhere nice and the budget was looking really healthy so we went for it. We had Vietnamese food in the hotel for dinner and chilled out for the evening.
The next day the weather was beautiful and we spent the whole day sunbathing on the beach and by our pool. We went hunting for pretty shells and found millions of tiny crabs running around and hiding in the sand. After paddling for a
while Jo got stung by an orange coloured jellyfish, but being an expert with jellyfish stings, she just got Jay to grab some ice and some insect bite cream and she soldiered on. What a trooper.
We then investigated the water and found lots more orange jellyfish, so we got our revenge and stabbed a few of the culprit's brothers with a big stick and buried them in the sand to prevent other people being stung. Soon after that we went to the pool, as it felt a little safer than swimming in the sea. It must have been around 32 degrees and Jay had random patches of sunburn to prove it.
The next day we did pretty much the same and took it easy. About 4pm we decided to watch the sunset with a nice romantic stroll along the beach. The sky was bright blue at one side of the beach and burning orange and red colours at the other end. Needless to say we took lots of pictures (see below). All was going well until we spotted a dead dog on the beach with its frozen legs sticking out. Oh dear, romantic walk over! We quickly
turnaround and headed back the other way. Luckily all the fisherman (and fisherwoman) were bringing in their evening catches from their big nets. So we watched them and it took our minds off the dog. The nets were huge but the catches were pretty poor for ½ a days work. A few tiddlers, a load of little crabs and jellyfish which were all discarded and thrown on the beach, some crabs were on their backs unable to get back on their feet, so we went on a mission to give them a second chance by turning them over and ushering them back to the sea. One fisherman had a small octopus (mmm tasty), and there were a few shrimp but that was about it.
That night we ate at a massive swanky hotel. Luckily the food wasn't as dear as the rooms. When we left across the road there was some banging music playing so we went to investigate. It was even too loud for us and thats saying something. They had put on a disco and karaoke at a small hotel. No one was dancing and no one was singing (not that you'd hear them over the music),
so we did one and headed for bed for our very early start the next morning.
We woke up around 4.25am for our sunrise trip to the white sandunes. We were picked up in a jeep with open sides, while it was still dark and we motored to the dunes to make it to the top for sunrise.
We didn't quite see dawn break but as the sunrose we made it to the top of one of the huge white sandunes, kitted out with our tatty bits of plastic aka duneboards which cost 30p to rent (we even haggled for them!) After taking in the view and taking lots of snaps. We had a few goes at sliding down the dunes. Jo cut her legs a bit on the sharp edges (they don't care too much about health and safety here) but we had a laugh and managed to get quite a bit of speed up with a running start. Absolutely covered in sand by the end of it though.
Once we'd had enough, the driver took us to them next stop – the red sand dunes, which were no where near as impressive. Not as big or
as attractive so we got to the top and then ran down again and we moved on to the fishing village. We spent half an hour looking at the boats and playing with the cute little Vietnamese boy who was learning to walk and then jumped back in the jeep.
We got back to the hotel in time for breakfast, then we had a nap and checked out. After lunch we were on our way to Nha Trang to see what it had in store.
