3000+ islands and islets in the north of Vietnam Day 5 - 6 in Vietnam
Halong Bay
After 3 very hot days in Hanoi, we escaped from the crowded city to spend a more peaceful weekend in Halong Bay. Halong Bay is a beautiful series of some 3000+ volcanic islands, and a UNESCO World Heritage site, only 3 hours north of the capital. We booked a 2 day tour through our hotel in Hanoi, including transportation to the bay, 1 night on the boat, an English speaking guide, a visit to a grotto, kayaking and 4 very good meals - all for a total of US$35.00 each.
The 1000s of islands in the bay were formed by volcanic activity and sculpted by water and tides millions of years ago. They are uninhabited, but there is more and more tourist exploitation going on. Fortunately for us, it is still at a reasonable level today but we foresee that it will develop very fast in the coming years...
