We ended our two month Asia trip with a bang by flying back to Thailand for a little island time. 99% of the time we like to stay active while traveling but we were ready to switch it up a bit and completely relax. After tuk tuks, planes, boats and taxis and feeling like two hobos, we made it to the paradise of Ko Phi Phi island. You could say it finally felt like honeymoon time which has been a rarity on this trip. The only activity we did was snorkeling and a boat tour to different islands which included the movie set, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach. Kevin wasn't as excited as I was to be stepping in the same sand as Leonardo DiCaprio. The beach lived up to it's expectation and was stunning, minus the 1000 people that were there.
Second stop was Koh Tao. We scored an awesome hotel resort that we didn't want to leave, except for a little excitement on our first moped ride together. Kev wanted his own but I insisted on sharing because I didn't trust myself after the last time I drove one and we have shared EVERY moment together
for the last eight months so why not share a moped. Even though Kev assured me that he had "mad" moped skills (whatever that means), it took me a bit to trust him since I have never heard of him riding a moped ever and I can't say I trusted the crazy Thai drivers either. Throughout our trip we heard of countless tourists crashing mopeds in Thailand, most of which were people who thought they had mad skills and later found out they don't. After I got over my nerves and accepted that fact that if this is my time to go, so be it. It felt good to be cruising on the open road with my arms wrapped tightly around my husband and the air keeping me from sweating for the first time in six weeks. We were able to freely explore areas that we would have never gotten to see. One being a random tourist spot along the coast with rock formations of a vagina and penis. Despite the few arguments over me holding on too tightly and doing an awful job GoProing our ride, it was a succes. No scrapes or bruises. The last island stop was
Ko Pha Ngan. We stayed at a place called Cookie Salad. Yes, you read it correctly, can't make that name up. Once we saw the name we had to see what Cookie Salad was all about. We weren't the only ones. On our way there we met a couple in the taxi that was staying at the previous hotel that booked this place for the same reason. Having a complete random name for a hotel is apparently one effective way to get guests. Well we couldn't find any connection the hotel had to cookies or a salad besides the ones on the menu, but it was still a great place to chill out for a couple of days. The extent of our physical activity was paddleboard in for two hours to watch the sunset and a massage on the beach, and I have to say it was perfect. You may never hear me say that ever again after a week of doing nothing on the beach. I know traveling does not compare to the daily grind of work work work, but the gypsy lifestyle can get a bit exhausting. We were even too lazy to take many pictures. Never have
both of us been so content sitting on our asses. And doing nothing pretty much sums up our Thai island experience. Good thing we had this week of rest in order to prepare us for our journey out of the country. Getting to our next destination of Kathmandu involved a very long moving day that consisted of taxis, two ferries, a twelve hour overnight train ride to Bangkok, a train, a flight to Kuala Lumpor Malasia and then another flight to Katmandu. We were trying to forget that other tourists that we met were flying directly to Bangkok for the same price as our train ride, but we would never have had the experience of a Thai train. Let's just say it wasn't the cleanest of the trains we have been on. We each had a little cubbyhole with somewhat of a bed to sleep in. Going to the bathroom was a different story. Trying to hold it for that long was not happening. Not that we should be surprised because in all of the Asian countries that we experienced, we have seen how the Asians have a complete disregard for the environment. They think who needs trash cans around
when you can just freely throw whatever out the window or into the rivers and oceans. Perhaps in their minds they think it will just magically disappear. So when you go to the toilet on the train you are squatting over the tracks and all of your pee, poop and paper lands right onto the tracks. So if you find yourself in Thailand crossing train tracks, don't just watch out for oncoming trains, be sure to look where you step! Being hungry and sleep deprived we ended up in the only place open for breakfast and we blew our daily budget on a well overpriced meal. We were beyond caring of being ripped off at that point. Then we literally ran all around Bangkok looking for a post office to ship home a box and already cutting it close to arriving on time at the airport. God only knows if it will ever get there. This is when having no clue of the language and where you are becomes stressful. Needless to say tensions were a bit high. As we walked into the airport a post office was staring right at us. On a positive note we got a good
workout in. And then we realized we had to jump through one more hoop. It all started to make sense why our day was going the way it was... it was Friday the 13th! I was told that I was not allowed to board the plane because I didn't have enough blank pages in my passport. Knowing that I was probably in need of a new one, never would I have thought that they wouldn't let me out of the country. Having to board a plane in an hour and a booked trek that was leaving the next day we panicked. There was no way I could wait
until Monday to go to the embassy. Kevin started ripping out an old visa out of my passport until the airline manager flipped and looked like she was going to get us arrested on the spot. Lesson learned that is against the law. Kev said what if we were to leave the airport and come back and you don't recognize us. Our luck changed and she agreed. We were able to rip out a visa to free up some space and thankfully we were on our way out of Kathmandu.
