So today half of my M5 class (11th grade) was out "attending a sport event" (whatever that means) so instead of teaching the few students that were in class just to reteach them the material next time I decided to pull up pictures of Christmas things and have them explain what they saw.
This is how it went:
I started out easy and just asked then "What is Christmas?"
Response: "Birth or Death of Jesus...We aren't sure...but definitely something to do with Jesus."
Next question I pulled up a picture of Santa on his sleigh and asked what this was.
Response: "That's Santa."
Me: "Who is Santa?"
Response: "Old fat man who has tiny children slaves who make toys."
Me: "Why does he make them make toys?"
Response: "To give to children."
Next I showed them a picture of a Christmas tree and asked them what it was
Response: (proudly states) "A CHRISTMAS tree"
Me: "Awesome, what kind of tree is it?"
Response: "CHRISTMAS tree."
Me: "No it has a name"
Response: "Winter Tree...it grows in Snow." Then one girl yelled in the back "Pine!"
Me: "Why do we decorate it?"
Response: "You put lights on it so Santa will know how to get to your house."
Next I showed them a Christmas Pickle and asked them why we put it in the tree
Response: "Reindeer snacks." "Santa is fat and needs to eat pickles."
Finally I showed them a stocking and asked them what it was
Response: "Its a sock you fill with candy."
Me: "Why?"
Response: "Because kids like candy?"
Me: "Do all the kids get candy or just the good kids?"
Response: "Just the good kids."
Me: "What do the bad kids get?"
Response: "MEDICINE!!!!"
Me: "hahaha no....close..."
Response: "rocks?"
Me: "Sort of...they get coal, you know what coal is right?"
Response: "Why would you give bad kids coal? Its cold for Christmas right? Don't they want coal to burn to give warm up their houses? I dont understand why you'd rather have candy than
be warm."
Talk about making lemonade out of lemons.
