Scootin' around
Last night we picked up a scooter from my chat friend Jen. Today we woke up about 8.30am, got showered and dressed and jumped on the scooter to explore Phuket a little.
It didn't take long for us to get completely lost, even the map we had did not help 1 little bit. It was fun though adapting to the Phuket traffic, I ride a scooter at home as my regular form of transport but dealing with the traffic in Phuket was a different story.
It didnt take long to adjust to the Thai road rules, or lack thereof. Only had one close call when I was trying to find the side street to turn down to get to beach road and found it at the last minute. I turned down the street but forgot its one of the streets with lanes in opposite direction to normal, ie: I should have been on the right side of the road , not the left!!
I got abused by the thai guy on the scooter heading straight towards me, on his side of the road, was close but all Shan and I could do was
piss ourselves laughing as the guy went nuts at me!!
We took a ride past the Aquamarine Resort in Kamala Beach which we stayed at last time. The road was just as bad as we remembered it and we had to ride quite slowly. By about 11am we were absolutely starving, having not yet had breakfast. We found a little restaurant in Kamala where we settled down for coffee, croissant, bacon & eggs, potatos, and ham and cheese and egg crepe, all for a measly 215 baht.
We found our way back to the Holiday Inn, parked the scooter and wandered across the road to the OTOP Markets. We bought a couple of T-Shirts and had a bit to eat for lunch.
I had decided to get a tattoo whilst in Phuket, so we looked up Patong Tattoo which we had seen recommended on Gary and Cathy's webpage, and headed there for a chat.
We met Mit and Wat and sat down to look at photos of tattoo designs. With a bit of improvisation and Mit drawing a design on my arm/shoulder, we agreed on a design and I put down a deposit to get it
done on Wednesday.
BBQ, Sunshine Bar, Bangla Rd & Ladyboys
We had booked in for a Saturday night BBQ with Richard and Megumi, a weekly affair, and we were picked up by our driver at about 5pm from our hotel. He drove us down to Rawai beach where we were dropped of at a local restaurant and met up with the other tourists, totaling 42 of us from memory, including Richard and Megumi.
We had a big buffet dinner costing 250 baht p/p (great value) and met a few other people from the trip advisor forum.
After dinner the drivers came back and took us 5 minutes up the road to the Sunshine Bar. We had read a lot about peoples experiences here on the net and seen the photos, so we knew we were in for a fun night!
The staff at the Sunshine Bar were so much fun, doing their dances and singing behind the bar and engouraging everyone to join in. Several drinks were consumed ( though Shan wasn't drinking) and we met some really nice people. It was really good to meet Reet who I had been
emailing for a few weeks before we left Aus, and also Kane who was also from Adelaide, same as Reet.
We all hit it off really well and had a great time, limboing under the umbrella behing the bar and climbing the pole to ring the bell. Some people made climbing the pole look really easy so I decided to give it a go. OMG!! It wasn't that easy at all!!
Reet commented on how she got one photo of most people climbing the pole but in the time it took me she managed to get 4 photos!!! Yeah thanks Reet!!!LOL
Shan really enjoyed dancing with the girls behind the bar and got several photos taken, even some with the resident ladyboy.
At 10pm the drivers picked us up again to return us to our hotels. Reet, Kane, an Irish couple, Shan and myself met up at the Holiday Inn and headed out to Bangla Road to party the night away.
Reet and I tried to negotiate a good deal for a Ping Pong Show on Bangla Rd but not everyone wanted to go!! LOL.
We ended up at the Tiger Bar I think it
was called, and settled down on barstools and ordered drinks. There were several girls and ladyboys and some that could have been either, dancing up on the poles around the bars.
Kane decided to try his luck at Connect 4 with one of the bar girls, but he soon learnt that they do this for a living. This didnt stop him having another go, and again.... at 100 baht a game if you lose it was becoming an expensive night for him, haha.
Shan, Reet and myself decided to go and sit at a different area in the bar and got chatting (well flashed at!!) by a ladyboy!!
Reet and he/she compared breasts and it was decided Reets' definitely felt more real!! LOL
Shan and Reet ended up dancing up on the bar pole, with a little coaxing from yours truly, and gyrated for the crowd.
It was a great night out and somewhere along the way Kane disappeared, apparently just chatting to a "nice"girl at one of the bars. Yeah right!! I'm sure none of us will know exactly what happened with him that night, even him as he had had a few!!
At about
2am Shan, Reet and I decided to call it a night and head back to our respective hotels, Kane nowhere to be seen.
It was a great night out, and one none of us will forget in a hurry.
