Hello all,
I know its been a while but I wanted to have plenty of material in order to write a (somewhat) interesting entry.
So after we left Etta we arrived in Phuket... We got into a Taxi at Phuket airport and headed for a hotel in Phuket town which was recomended by our guide book. We got a pretty awful room and put our bags down. We decided to go for a walk and came across this very cute cafe. We decided to go in for a drink. The owner was this very sweet, funny and bubbly Thai lady who had grown up all over the world... Needless to say we all got along famously... She invited Tamara and I to join her and her friends for dinner that night.
We had a very nice meal and a couple drinks, but feeling very tired we went back to our hotel to go to sleep.... The following day we went back to the cafe to see Giorgi (our friend) and she gave us some recomendations... She told us that if it was partying that we were looking for that we should go to Patong beach (though she
told us that she was not a fan of Patong).
We decided to head to Patong. On arrival we started our search, in the heat, with our backpacks for accomodation. Not finding anywhere suitable we picked up the trusty guidebook and called a place which had rooms. We took a Tuk Tuk to the hotel in question where we were taken to our very nice room.
After a quick shower we headed to the beach for swimming, reading and tanning.
That evening we headed out for dinner and began to realise why our friend was not a fan of Patong... The streets are filled with dirty tourists which Thai prostitutes.... The bars are all intended for a certain type of tourist and display signs stating that "if you are still standing, you need another beer!" Not really my kind of place!
We spent most of our evening time in the room reading as we were scared to venture outside! We did have one very nice meal at a restaurant which was recomended to me by someone on aSmallworld. It was very beautiful restaurant set in the hills around patong.
The following day we decided to
go to another beach called Karon... We found an awful hotel where (as our standards have lowered beyond recognision) we stayed. Karon beach was very nice but very quiet... Mostly families... Ill spare you the mundane day to day events in Karon!
We decided it would be fun yo go back to Phuket town to meet up with Giorgi. We checked back into the same hotel and went over to the cofee shop to see her... We we ended up staying a couple of days in Phuket town where giorgi was the most gracious host... She took us to places we would never have gone on our own... We went ot this amazing restaurant in the hills looking over the entire town and out to the sea. It was breathtaking... We ate a local vegetable dish which can be found nowhere else in the world which is unfortunate because it was delicious... She also took us to a restaurant which we would never have set foot in... Ithad some of the best food weve eaten since in Thailand! She took us to the food market where we walked around buying ingrediant for the delicious cakes she makes for her
shop every morning... The market was remarkably clean and the vendours displayed their good beautifully with pride.
On our last evening she took us to her flat for some late night snacks. The flat was amazing! The living room was open plan with the dining room and kitchen.. It was a massive loft space beautifully decorated with Jim Thompson silks throughout. She also showed us her bedroom which was equally magnifiscent!
The following morning we came by her shop to say goodbye and headed off to get a boat to Phi Phi island with hopes that it would not be a repeat of Patong... On arrival we were pleasantly surprised to find an adorable town set on idilic beaches... We could tell that the crowds were much more our types of people... They are all young beautiful people... ( we fit right in!)
Tamara left me in a cofee shop with the bags while she went in search of a place to stay... She came back having found a decent place where the price was right! We dropped our thing and met a very sweet greek couple who were staying in the room next door to ours.
We decided to all have dinner together which was thouroughly enjoyable. Talking with thyem made me slightly homesick for Greece (oinousses) as we didnt go for the first time ver this summer... After dinner we went for drinks at a bar where a fire show was going on. The thai girls and boys were amazing with their fire stick and poi. They not only swang them about in manner that were inconceivable but did so while dancing to the different songs that were playing. On girl did an almost ballet to a classical peice all the long swinging the fire around!
The following day we spent on the beach reading and swimming in the water. Towards the end of the day however the tide goes so far out that you end up walking for hundreds of meters in ancle deep water... It is quite a weird sight to see all the bathers in the middle of the bay with the water only reaching their ancles....
That evening we ate and drank with Spiros and Monica and even got some dancing in! It was a great evening and we were sad to see them go the following day....
The few days that followed were spent reading on the beach and eating a different restaurants...
We decided after a few days to take a boat tour of the island which had been recomended to us by Spiros and Monica. It was really very nice. We went to see the beach where the film the beach was filmed as well as many others. The last stop was Shark point where we were told that, as the name suggests, there would be sharks. Tamara nd I got our snorkles on and ventured into the water... We swanm around a while enjoying the stunning marine life around the coral. After about five minutes I saw two sharks swim by! It was very exciting and surprisingly not at all scary! Tmara missed them unfortunately but was now more determined then ever to see sharks of her own. We smwm on together a short while longer and sure enough a small shark swm in our view... I followed it closely in order to get a good picture... Just as I had taken a couple photos, a massive shark swims right by us! I got to get a photo and sure enough our dispable
camera was out of pictures! I guess youll just have to take my word for it that it was 8 meters long and a 2 meters wide (slight exageration added for effect)...
On the boat we met a very nice Canadian guy, a Finish couple and two dutch girls. That evening we met up for drinks after dinner. We had a great night of dancing which ended up on the beach after the bar/club closed.
The following day was the Start of the Thai new year... This holliday is maked by wter fights all over the country and lasts between 3 and 12 days depending on where you are. We went for dinner at a very nice french restaurant with our Canadian friend Lee and headed into the streets. It was pouring out... The rainy season has begun! Lee bought a water gun and Tamara and I found buckets which we were using to wet the already soaked passers by. We ended up meating up witha friend of Tamaras from Toronto who she had run into the previous day! He was traveling with some other people who were all very fun and friendly. We all went to the
club soaking wet and danced the night away...
The next couple of days were a blast! The days involved spraying people in the streets and getting soaking over and over! Everyone was very into it! The venings were spent all wet in the clubs with the group... One night we watched some boxing matches which I never would have thought I would enjoy but I did!
Thats it for now... Tamara and Lee are waiting for me to got to dinner so Im gonna leave it ther
Miss you all and hope to hear from you alll
