Warm greetingsWarm greetingsWarm greetings

We saw these friendly Thais along our long tail boat ride/water tour of Bangkok. Very nice and warm welcoming!
We made it! Well, almost there! Close to our placement now, in which we will arrive tomorrow! Right now in Krabi, after 1 night travel on bus, and 1 night travel on train! Enjoying the simple pleasures today, such as the greatest spongebath ever and a peaceful nap on a bed!! Yes, a bed-how nice!! So much to say, don't know where to begin.. We have met many wonderful Thai people, who have been helpful for safe travels. We have been learning more Thai language and able to purchase food from street vendors and markets! The food has been delicious, plenty of food everywhere! Anywhere from the side of the highway to rural villages. Just have to remember to say "mai sai pong shurat" (no MSG!!) Last night's dinner consisted of a fried chicken dumpling-like food from looks and taste, and fresh corn, cut off the cob, eaten with our fingers, traditional Thai style. It didn't compare to our dinner that we made the other night which was a fabulous feast consisting of chicken curry, sticky rice, papaya salad, tossed salad with spicy peanut sauce (very, very good-"dee mak"!), lots of different fruit-mangosteen, looks like a grapefruit but more sweet, guava,

Beautiful park in Nong khai-statues telling the stories of Buddha. Very interesting! The park appears to be ancient, however we found out that it is only 46 years old! Quite amazing and very peaceful.
limes, lemons, and other unidentifiable but yummy fruits! We were honored as volunteers and for being the cooks (see pictures). All of the orientation leaders were very nice and very appreciative of everything We are very appreciative and grateful as well. We are enjoying the relaxed, "mai pen rai" (no worries) way of life. Everything here is very laid back and we just go with the flow. We live on a day to day basis without knowing what is in store for the next day, which has been a big difference from back home, however has been easily adopted. We have been well received by the locals since we are volunteers ("a-sa-saa-mak") who have treated us with more respect compared to the tourists. Knowing a little bit of language goes a long way! Smiling helps too here in the land of smiles! We have already learned so much in such little time and are looking forward to meeting and working with all the people-teachers, monks, orphanages, students, families. We are finding out that we are going to be doing more than just teaching English in the school. They have a holiday and testing during our time here, so we will
Temple of the Golden BuddhaTemple of the Golden BuddhaTemple of the Golden Buddha

One of our orientation leaders, Nik, praying in front of the Golden Buddha. This is a highly revered temple in northern Thailand in which the temple walls are painted to tell the story of the 3 Buddha statues that were made for a royal family, and the travels of the statues themselves. This one is actually made of pure gold and is 1 of the 3 original Buddhas that survived the travels. One of them sank to the bottom of the Mekong River and still sits there because they believed that was the fate of that Buddha statue. The other one sits in a temple in Bangkok.
be in the Temple Schools during that time, also orphanages on Saturday mornings, which will be quite delightful! More later! Talk to you soon! Enjoy!

We were the 3 volunteers at orientation and the cooks for the welcoming dinner, or should I say feast. This picture was taken before we ate, in which one of the orientation leaders honored us with the colorful, flowers wrapped around our necks. Brenda is a volunteer from Australia and has been volunteering in Vietnam and Laos, and now in Thailand.

Our new friends in Nong khai from around the world. The blonde on the left is from Holland, the guy on the far right is from Sweden, and to the left of him a girl from France/Vietnam, to the left of her our head chef and cooking teacher from Thailand, and 3 Thais.

In Bangkok, huge reclining buddha at the Wat Pho, motto is "calmness is happines." We are wearing yellow shirts to honor the Royal Family in Thailand, in which most of the Thai population do on Mondays. Trying to gain some respect too from the money grubbing Tuk-Tuk drivers!!! :)
