Pic of Phi Phi Don
This was the touristy one but managed to get a pic with no people - yey! Before I get to Phi Phi I'll tell you about the trip there first. Last time I was on I was in Luang Prabang in Laos but on my way by plane to Vientiane. Got there safe and sound, checked back in at Syri 2 Guesthouse then went for a few beers and games of pool at Khop Chai Dai down the road. Met Warrick, the Aussie guy I met there last time I was there so just got shitfaced with him, watched United batter Wigan in the Carling Cup final then headed off to another one of those Loas clubs but it was as shocking as the one in Vang Vieng so jibbed after 2 or 3 beers.
Next morning I'd booked the train to Bangkok but surprise surprise (cue the Cilla gag), they'd forgotten to sort it for me but a hurried phonecall later and I was back on track (excuse the pun). The minibus to the station arrived at 4pm and there was a Sussex girl called Julia coming from my guesthouse so spent the trip chatting to her about our random adventures along the way. When we got to the border we crossed the Friendship Bridge from
Sunset at Phi Phi Don
Shoulda kept the camera a bit more still though I reckon, blurred to fook! Laos to Thailand then jumped straight on the train to Bangkok on the other side. On the border crossing I met a girl who'd broken her ribs in Vang Vieng tubing when someone let go of a swing too early and landed straight on her - ow!
The journey to Bangkok took about 12 hours or so but I unusually managed to get some sleep on the train due to it being a sleeper, right up until the point this old Canadian guy from the bunk below me slapped my legs and went "get up, they want to put the beds away!". I dragged my sorry arse outta bed, eyes still half shut, only to see that everyone else was sleeping soundly still - nice one numbnuts! When I got to the station I saw that the train to Surrat Thani was due in about 4 hours so spent the morning wasting time in the station going on the internet, posting postcards home, getting a shower to wake me up again and finally buying the book of The Beach coz it just seemed fitting (lol), then off I went on my next journey. This one was seated so it was
Kristie at Phi Phi Lay
Dunno what she was clapping for, probably laughing at my accent for the 1000th time that day or summat... lol a proper killer but arrived in Surrat Thani at some stupid time dazed but safe enough, I only had 4 hours till my bus to Krabi though so I checked into a hotel and got all of about 3 hours kip before I was on my way again - yey...
Didn't take long to get to Krabi like but after 48 hours of constant travelling and 4 days on the move it was definitely starting to get to me so my head was in bits! Yet another 3 hour wait was in store for me in Krabi before the boat turned up so went to cheer myself up with a bit of English comfort food while I waited - a massive plate of KFC! :o)
The boat to Phi Phi Don only took about 90 minutes and I've got to say, it was well worth the last few days travelling coz the place was absolutely stunning! Checked into Chanteay Guesthouse (or something like that, it's near the big metal Marlins in the centre), and I can well recommend that place coz the owner, Li, is well helpful! It cost 500B a night but even though that's 7 quid or so
Ainhoa, Che and Nora at Carpe Diem
Quality bar this one, had a well good laugh there for a proper basic room, compared to the rest of the places around this was by far the cheapest coz they all seemed to start around 15 quid a night plus!
Instead of going to bed for a bit like a sensible person I went and got straight on the pop, it worked though so no worries. Met 2 girls from the Basque area of Spain (they were adament not to be called Spanish), so went and got shitfaced on the buckets with them two (Nora and Ainhoa).
Next day I decided it was time for me to try adn get a tanso parked myself at Carpe Diem Bar and fried myself silly. Once I was satisfyingly pink (lol), I went for a wander over to the side of the island which was worst hit by the tsunami in 2004. Building work continues but you can easily tell the difference from the main bit due to the bare spots all around the place. I actually met a lad working at Carpe Diem Bar whose nickname was Lucky due to the fact that he was there when the two waves hit but managed to excape them by running up the hill - Fucking Lucky more like eh?! Met a cute Aussie bird called Kristie in Carpe Diem that night so went out on the piss with her and got her on the buckets of Sang Som for the 1st time since she'd been in Thailand but don't think she was that keen so got shitfaced finishing them off on my own.
Next day we decidedto get a boat to Phi Phi Lay to see where The Beach was filmed and after a half-arsed attempt at eating a fry up due to the hangover then we were on our way. Even with the hangover, the trip was unbeatable (just check the colour of the water on the pics)! Boat cost 800B between us for 3 hours with snorkels included and it was one of the highlights of my trip so far. I haven't been snorkelling for years so I was buzzing off it; I even saw a Moray Eel (the evil looking one with the little sharp teeth), it's just a shame I couldn't take a pic of owt down there. We headed back after a full lap round the island, went for a beer then I went to email the pics I'd taken that day to my account so I couldn't lose them and got a delightful email off my ex-workmate Russ bitching at me for spending too much time on PC's while I'm away - you're just jealous though ya twat so shush. lol.
Hangover was still causing me trouble when I went for a well nice steak down the road so wasn't at all chuffed leaving that, beer wasn't going down the best either so after meeting up with 2 Oxford and 1 Swedish lass and a guy from London down at Carpe Diem again we were all going our seperate ways for an early night (1:30am anyway) - poor do eh?
Next day I got the boat back to Krabi coz Phi Phi was costing too much, checked in somewhere for 250B a night (3 pound 50), then went to the local Irish bar for a pint. Met 2 blokes from Leeds who knew the owner's missus so she drove us round town showing us the sights, after well into double figures of the pints and bottles of Chang though and a 1/2 bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label I was decidedly worse for wear, the perfect time to start playing people at pool! Meanwhile them lot jibbed home but I'd decided to stay coz I'd met a load of Irish people and was having a good craic, little did I know that I was about 5 or 6km from where I was staying and the taxi's had stopped coz it was about 5 in the morning but after a 2 hours of walking and a large amount of pleading with people I managed to blag a lift back to Krabi Town off this Thai couple for 100B - yey!
Surprisingly enough I missed my bus to Kuala Lumpur that morning due to the worst hangover I've had to date since I left the UK - Chang at 6.4% is bloody lethal stuff I tell ta! Thankfully my guesthouse sorted the ticket out to go the next day instead so it was all good, I'll tell you about my nightmare journey to Kuala Lumpur next time though (I need to stop getting these bloody buses eh?!).
Look at that, a full blog with severely limited amounts of swearing (for me anyway), well that's a fucking turn up for the books innit?! Laters kids...
