So, after the whole Cambodia stint, I quickly got back to Bangkok to hook up with Angela and we both set off to the islands to meet with our fate there.
I've always wanted to go to Ko Phi Phi and thought it was about time to finally realise that little dream. Off we went then. Little did I know how Angela felt about boats though. Poor girl was sick something like 10 times while on the boat and then fainted when we got to the island. She was then carried in a trolley to our hotel altogether with our luggage. The official version says she was still in shock and couldn't walk properly. I say, nice trick Angela, I didn't feel like walking either! Quite an eventful start anyway. We obviously took it easy that night and fed her with tons of plain rice - not the most exciting meal but did the job.
Next day we decided to explore the island and it doesn't take long to do that as it's only tiny. There are no cars and hardly any motorbikes - you simply walk everywhere. It was wonderful to be able to forget about the existence
of cars - so relaxing!
Once on Phi Phi, one has to do the obvious and visit the beach where Leonardo Di Caprio was hanging around when making the film. I knew it would be beautiful but I didn't expect to see what I saw. I was mostly mesmerised by the colour of the water - it is just perfect! We watched the film a few days after and it was amazing how it all suddenly made sense! We were able to notice all the nuances they picked up on, e.g. the street vendors in Bangkok or Thai invincibility when it comes to electricity (it's always close to water) - just little things like that.
Some of you may not know that Mon suffers from one minor fear that sometimes can be a real pain: the fear of open water. Digging a bit deeper, when I was in primary school, I witnessed one of my classmates get drowned on the first day of summer holidays. It wasn't a pretty sight... I don't really think about it but it's most probably got stuck at the back of my head, hence the uneasiness with water and swimming where it's deep.
Now that I've explained myself, let's go back to the happy stuff: when I saw that water in the Phi Phi's lagoons, I just couldn't help myself but jump right into it. Still in a life jacket as it's not THAT easy to get rid of a major fear THAT quickly but it still was a big breakthrough and I loved every minute of it. The snorkelling was fab and simply floating in that water made my day. I even wanted to do diving (check me out!) but so ran out of time. That will definitely be my next trip though :o)
In terms of the views, that beach was probably one of the most wonderful places I have ever been to. I still have quite a bit to explore but somehow, you can tell something is going to be pretty special. Of course, being a beautiful place where someone famous made a movie, brings the whole lot of tourists and so the beach was rather busy but the view made up for it - just look at the pics and see for yourselves!
Ko Phi Phi is a great place to lie on the beach -
one thing it doesn't have is a good nightlife. There is one bar that always attracts party people but one has to be aware of a major disadvantage of being 28 when going out in Thailand - you are older than the majority. And I don't mean just a few years older - it's like a decade or something!!! Isn't that outrageous??!! We met lots of nice boys but no matter what you end up doing with them, it's always going to look illegal. You really start wondering if their parents know where they are! So, we made sure we were very decent and...we got bored with it and decided to move on to another island, this time known for the best nightlife in the whole wide world - Kho Pha Ngan. And it was mental!
So far, I've kept on visiting places that make me feel like I've literally gone to heaven - that makes me realise going back home will be a bit of a shock as for some reason, the views there never made me feel that way... Don't get me wrong, I like Big Ben but it hardly gives me shivers when I look at
it and you know what I mean, right?
Anyway, the Kho Pha Ngan chapter is coming soon. I've put up pictures from the parties that I have managed to attend there on facebook, so anyone interested to have a snoop around, have a look there. If you are not on facebook and want to see them, you have two options: join the cool people or wait till I come back and show you the pics myself (the last option might involve a late night session as there a hundreds of them, so do think twice before making a decision!).
Take care y'all and catch you soon!
