Phi Phi
On our snorkel trip we did some exploring and came across this beautiful little beach bay. We set out to the southern islands after spending about a week on Phuket Island. Our first stop was Koh Phi Phi, which is the busiest island in the area and well known for its picturesque beaches and clear waters. We were not disappointed to say the least. The island is still under heavy construction after being nearly completely wiped out from the tsunami. With very few hotels open, and more and more people flocking to the island recently, it was quite a challenge finding accommodation for our large group. After tiring ourselves of walking, we decided to split up and got separate rooms. Ryan, Trevor and I lucked out and got a nice air-conditioned place costing not much more than the other guys’ - which resulted in everyone hanging out in our room for the few days on the island.
We heard many stories about a bar on this island at which you could challenge a friend to a Muay Thai fight for the award of a few “buckets.” Reggae bar was the name and we found it quite quickly (the main town is quite small and with no cars on the island everything is pretty easy to find.)
Koh Lanta
The boys enjoying some Changs and some tunes (thanks for bringing speakers Randy.) Trevor and Ryan had planned a match almost a month ago when we arrived, so the anticipation was quite high. However, with peer pressure and some good brotherly competition, Jason and I were the first to step into the ring. It was quite a slugfest, with both of us looking like large untrained boxers; we barely could qualify the bout as a kickboxing match. After three grueling rounds (actually only 2 minutes each but we’re quite out of shape) we were still alive and had smiles on our faces. The referee deemed me the winner, and I left the ring happy to have beaten my brother at something I’ve never before been able to do. It was a great victory.
Shortly afterwards Trevor and Ryan stepped into the ring, Trevor with his Tae Kwon Do experience and Ryan with his ruthless rugby mentality. The match was full of excitement and both fighters fought very hard. In the end Trevor was the victor, and we both shared our victory buckets with pride. Later on Jordan found a Swedish counterpart he challenged to a match in the ring. That fight was quite exciting as well though the Swede was able to
Pre-Fight
Jason and I square off to photographers before our much anticipated match. take the victory in the end. In the end, a few minor injuries were sustained but we all had a great time. It’s a very unique bar to visit!
The next day we hired a longtail boat to take us on a snorkeling adventure. It was a great chance to enjoy the crystal clear waters and unique landscape of the island’s shores. We skin dived a coral reef and afterwards another reef just off of ‘Bamboo island.’ There were dozens of different fish in the water and it was almost overwhelming when large schools of fish would swarm me when our guide dropped bread in the water around us. My favourites would have to be the clown fish, angel fish and parrot fish. It’s cool because you can hear the parrot fish chomping away at the coral when down in the water. We stopped again on the return for some more swimming, and managed to get lots of great photos of the limestone cliffs and beaches that scatter the shores.
We also enjoyed some more beach volleyball, though the competition here was higher and so was the net! We spent the rest of the time lounging around and
Sunset on Phi Phi
Taken as our volleyball game came to an end. eating more great Thai food, and enjoyed some of the night life. It seems there are a lot more young tourists on Phi Phi than Phuket and everyone seems happier.
Next stop was Koh Lanta, a bigger island with a lot more places to stay! The coast is just one long beach that stretches for several kilometers, along which are dozens and dozens of resorts, and we were able to find a really nice cheap one that could accommodate all of us. Lanta is a much more relaxed island and everyone is very easy going. We enjoyed the slow pace and had a good time hanging out around the resort. This was Randy and Adrian’s last week before they fly back to Vancouver, so we tried to see as much as we could! We only spent two nights there and as quick as we arrived we moved north to Ao Nang, which is right near the Railay area which has lots more beaches and even some good cliffs for jumping.
Tonight we plan to celebrate Jordan’s birthday in the few bars on the strip. Tomorrow the boys start their trek of flights back to Vancouver. Then we plan
Good snorkelling
Off the coast of Koh Phi Phi, we were brought to a really nice coral reef where we got swarmed by tropical fish. to do some more exploring of the area before we take a quick trip down to Malaysia before my Mom, Sister and Dad fly into Bangkok in a few weeks!
