The Vikings
Always looking good even at 5 in the morning! Hey All,
after doing two huge nights in Bangkok it was time for us to head out to the Full Moon party on the island of Ko Pa Ngan which is in the south east of Thailand. We left at 5:30 in the afternoon in a luxury double decker bus and headed over night to Suratthani (a port) then a 2.5 hour boat trip first to Koh Samui where some people got off and then onto Ko Pha Ngan.
The bus trip was quite fun as we quickly hooked up with some party animals in the downstairs area and got on the beers! In the "Party Room" we had the four Poms Chris, John, Ally(where are you?) & Natasha. Next we had the Vikings(Danish) with Angry Anna and Charlotta. Finally we had a few other randoms who weren't interested in getting on it - so they don't rate a mention really.
Anyways Chris, John, Charlotta and Anna ended up being our little crew on Koh Pha Ngan for the time we were there. Did I ever mention how much fun it is travelling and meeting heaps of different people!?!
So after travelling for close to 12 hours
at around 5 in the morning we all get shoved off the bus and told to wait for the 'transfer' to the port. After waiting about an hour another bus finally comes and drives us the whole 10 minutes to the port. Why the original bus couldn't go the extra 10 minutes is beyond me really. Anyways we wait around for another hour or so and jump on the boat and finally arrive at Tholongsala in blazing heat. After about 15 minutes we decided that our "Transfer", well, wasn't coming. So we jumped in the back of a taxi-bus-thinggy and headed over to our resort.
Our resort was actually quite nice & is situated on the top of a cliff on Haad Yeo beach which is on the Western side of the island. From all reports this is probably the better side to be on as the main party area (Haad Rin) located in the south has music going nearly 24 hours a day and the beachs have lots of stingers.
During this time of the year the South Western side of Thailand (Pi Pi, Phuket etc) is subjected to monsoonal weather patterns. A really cool thing about
the side of the island we were on is that the storms miss it by about 100kms to the west but every night like clockwork we could see these awesome electrical storms come up from the south and head north. Absolutely spectacular. The resulting cool breeze is also most excellent.
Unfortunately some poor building decisions were made at this resort. Instead of having the twin rooms facing over the beach the executive decision was made to face them at each other. This brilliant decision has only been eclipsed by the person who decided to put the drain in the highest point in the room.
Nonetheless we decided we wanted to pay a bit extra and get two double rooms right at the front. Everything we required for a holiday - A hammock, a view and the serenity!
So after a hectic first night playing a drinking game with the "crew' we made up on the fly (more details to come - it's awesome!) we prepared ourselves for the Full Moon Party.
As you may have guessed the Full Moon Party occurs once a month! It's located on Haad Rin beach in the south. It's not as I actually imagined it would be - one huge big party. But is actually a series of plubs (not a pub not a club) that open out on the beach and play their own style of music. Mainly Scitrance, trance and our favourite Drum & Bass. This however has the same effect as having one big party as people just stumble from one to the next.
Pete, John and I pretty quickly split from the rest of the group and headed to the left side of the beach(all orientation was lost by this stage). As you can imagine it got all very blurry from then on in and Pete decided he'd found a place for the night in the sand. So while Pete (aka Gary Gone at this time) was passed out John & I sat down and chilled out. Through out the night we met heaps of people just cruisin' around from England, Russia & even Finland (these shakes don't work, are you a police officer?)
Fast forward a couple of hours and the sun is coming up and the party still cranking (the red bull here is ridiculously strong), Gary has been replaced by Pete and we return to the D&B party to find Chris still going hard! All men left standing - YEAH!
Fortunately or unfortunately dependent upon your point of view none of us took camera's as we were expressly warned of pick pocketers.
But if you're thinking of going I'd say go! It was awesome and remember to head to the left hand side of the beach! Yeah!
