Hauling coconuts
To get the coconuts down they use a long bamboo stick with a hook on the end, and just let them drop We took a ferry from Ko Lanta to Koh Jum, where you have to jump from the ferry onto a long tail boat to get to the island. There is not much on the island except the basics. We got a little hut in the back of the lot, it was actually pretty nice for 300 baht, expect the electricity only ran from around 7pm to around 5am. Thats when the fan turned off and the room started to heat up. So there was definetly no sleeping in there. On our first day we rented bicycles and rode into town. Which is about 30 huts lined up down a street. We managed to find some fruit and water though. The we biked across the island to the north, which was about 8km. We saw a lot of Thai huts, this island isn't really on the tourist trail, so it felt a bit more Thai than the other places. The ride took us through a lot of huge rubber plantations, and in one we saw a monkey running around. It was our first wild monkey, so it was pretty cool. He was really shy though, so we couldn't get a good picture
of him. While we were there we also did a fishing trip. It was fun but not too exciting, we just dropped in a line with about 6 hooks, and pulled it up right away with about 6 little fish on the end. They brought them all back to the guest house, so I think that they ate them. Other than that we just lied around on the beach and looked for shells. We have about 100 little shells already, I hope we'll have enough room to take them all back. Then we took a long tail boat to Phi Phi island. It is the most beautiful place that we've been so far. We're staying on long bach which is in the southern bay. The water is soooo clear and green, and we have done some really nice snorkelling from right on the beach. The second day we were here we hired a long tail boat to go to Phi Phi Lei which is another small island which we can see from our beach. We got to do some snorkelling, and we went to Maya bay. Which is where they filmed "The Beach". It was such a nice beach and
Koh Jum Sunset
This was taken right after I found out how slippery the algae on these rocks can be. I managed to cut up my arm and hand, right after our 20 min walk to dinner. We had to turn around and go all the way back to clean up. a huge clear bay. But it was sooo packed with people. We stayed there for a little while and then did some more snorkelling around the bay. Our boat driver had a bag of bread that he threw in the water for the fish when we were swimming. So there where huge crowds of them all around us. We tried to catch some with our hands, but weren't very successful. We also got to stop at monkey beach. We saw about 30 monkeys there, they just run around and people feed them fruit. They were really cute, but about 5 min after we got there loads of boats showed up. And the beach was packed. The next day we started our advanced diving course. For day one we did a deep dive and a navigation dive. For the deep dive we went all the way down to 30meters. Then we lied on our backs and could feel the pressure when we tried to take a breath. On that dive we saw a sting ray, fin spotted lion fish, scorpion fish (very dangerous), clown fish, a few moray eels, and a big leopard shark who was just lying in the sand.
We got to get really close to him, and I even touched him which made him get up and swim around all of us. On the second dive we saw a big green turtle, and some barracuda. On the second day we got to dive at the King Cruiser wreck site. It was a ferry that used to take people from Phuket to Phi Phi, and sunk in 1997. We got to swim around and in some of the windows. We also saw the old engine room and some toilets where a morray eel was living. On our second dive that day we got to take a camera. So we took a lot of pictures, and I'm hoping to put some up here as soon as we get a copy of the cd. We saw pretty much the same fish but also a cuttle fish, and a massive grouper. We got back from those dives around 6pm, and we were scheduled to go on a night dive at 6:30. So we had just enough time to eat and get our equipment ready. The night dive was creepy at first but I got used to it. At one point we all
Long beach, Phi Phi
This is a view from the hill on the walk into town turned our torches off and saw the luminecence which are little plankton that light up when you move. It looked like there were millions of sparkles lighting up all around us. We saw pretty much the same fish as the day, I'm glad we didn't see a shark that time, it would have been pretty creepy! Now we're advanced open water divers. Now we're going to spend a couple of days checking out the island, and seeing a nice sunset!!
