Hot springs, beaches and rainforest…

Ok, so we left off in Ao Nang where we were relaxing for a few days with Anne and Cathy. From there we made a fabulous trip to a natural hot spring in the forest - basically you sit in a beautiful hot waterfall!! We also visited a place called the ‘Emerald Pool’ (pretty self explanatory!) and climbed 1267 steps up a mountain side to see a massive Buddha, avoiding the monkeys trying to grab our precious water on the way up.

Next stop was Khao Sok rainforest for a couple of days. We stayed in a lovely place called Green Valley Resort. The people there were so friendly it was like staying at a friend’s house; and it was really really good value. Using the bungalows as a base we went on a river canoe trip. As per his usual pedantic style Alex insisted on making a list of the wildlife that we came across. Here it is: mangrove snake, green viper, river otters, eagle, water monitor lizard (a BIG dragon type thing!!), and kingfishers. For those who like birds, I think that we also saw swallows, but unfortunately our guide didn’t know

We also did a day trek. So far on our trip, we had been used to people to referring to walking up a couple of steps as ‘strenuous’ (basically, strenuous meant not for fatties over 70 with high blood pressure)… but this really was pretty hardcore. The Hungarian girl who was on the trek with us sicked up her breakfast in first half hour - we started on a very steep slope up from the road straight into the jungle. Our guide, called ‘U’, was tiny and seemed to be fuelled by some strange leaves he kept chewing (apparently not cocoa leaves, but something similar I think). After stopping for several ciggies and a couple of chews of the leaf he would set off running through the forest up the mountain side - us sweaty westerners would be left struggling behind (although of course not Alex due to his superhuman strength).

During the trek we climbed 60 meters down the side of a waterfall and were glad to have a dip in the cool waters at the end (despite being stared at by park rangers with massive guns!). Due to too many fag breaks for

At the hot springs
the French, Hungarian and Thai folks (obviously not including Ursula, who has remained a non-smoker for a month!!!) we were a bit slow getting on with our trek - by the time we got back it was dark. But this had its advantages… although we still didn’t get to see any tigers (apparently they do have them in the park) we did get to see wild macaque monkeys - they spied on us from a safe distance.

Next stop was Ko Samui . This time we learned from our mistakes with the horrible sweaty rooms in Ko Phi Phi and made sure we looked at the rooms before we booked to stay in them. Based on a tip from a nice lady we met in a sawnthaew (a pick up truck style bus/taxi thing) we ended up staying a lovely bungalow resort run by a Belgian guy - a bit of French came in very useful here! . This place was a great bargain and was right next to the beach in a bay called Cheong Mon. It was

LUSH!

We spent most of the time here lying on the beach. In the evening we made a trip out to the local town. After some delicious authentic pizzas (proper Italian oven!!) we headed out to Transvestite Cabaret Show! It was fabulous!!!!! Yeah, ok, they didn’t quite look like Kylie Minogue (who they were dressed up as), but they certainly DID look like women!!!! We were slightly confused as to where they hid their bits in the high cut leotards they were wearing…

Although we could have done with a few more days in Samui, it was time to leave and yesterday we arrived in Chiang Mai… Off trekking with hill tribes tomorrow - more on the next blog!
