HIKING
Hiking is better at the higher altitudes at this time of year because of the heat.
I did my first
hike on 6th January 2011 , starting at 1,500 metres
which was mentioned in the previous blog.
The
hike Sun Feb 13th, 2011 was
along the Pilgrims' Trail.
It was a 600 meter climb from the Arboretum to Wat Suthep and back.
Along the way a Dalmatian dog we met while taking a break at the Phalad Temple
decided to tag along. He stayed with us until we ate at a restaurant then he
disappeared after gulping down his meal. It was as if he had collected his
commission from the restaurant owner for bringing a goup of farangs then went
off looking for another job.
On the way down we returned through grounds of Wat Fai Hin.
CNX is 300 meters =1000 feet altitude. Wat Doi Suthep 1,053 meters = 3,500 feet
We climbed 610 meters = 2000 feet
Total time of seven and a half hours.
On
Feb 20th the
Hike was from 700 Year Stadium to Huay Tung Thao
A 14 km circular hike. This was a lower altitude hike and
proved to be stressful because of the heat.
Sunday 6th March 2011-Circular Hike from Ban Doi Pui to summit of Doi Pui
This was a 11 kms Hike taking 5½ hours starting from the Hmong Tribal village Ban Doi Pui at an altitude of 1,270m with a leisurely walk through the beautifully kept garden (admission 10 bt) and continuing fairly level for the first 3 km though forest. Then we start the ascent and rise some 400 metres over 1.5 kms to reach the Doi Pui summit.
The walk down was steeper and more direct. Into the village itself was a very long length of cement steps.
Walking down it occurred to me that this was not good for the knees. Sure enough the next day and the next
few weeks off and on my knees were giving me problems.
March 20, 2011 Hike:
Circular hike from Ban Doi Suthep (1,000m) to Doi Suthep summit (1,601m).
via
Ban PhuPhing, the King's Palace.
Resting place was
San Ku, an historical site which had been looted.
Inside the chedi important historical artifacts had been found
Original from 18th century, since restored.
Total 11km.
Wat Chedi Luang
Buddhist ceremony at Wat Chedi Luang, Chiang Mai Pre-teen boys have an introduction to the Buddhist Wats whereby after an
initiation they spend a week or so living at the Wat, begging for food and
eating once a day before 11am.
See Photos.
Nagas as in photos:
In both Buddhism and Hinduism, are protective serpents which act as guardians against bad spirits are often found
along the staircases reaching up to the temples.
Birthday Party
Some people in Thailand sure know how to celebrate their birthday.
See videos and photos.
This is now April, which means: British college students are coming to Chiang Mai for their break and backpackers
will be flooding the city to celebrate the traditional Thai New Year, Songkran. A majority of expats leave the city
at this time so as not to suffer the ear-busting music on the streets
Hike leader, Brian
The Dalmation dog followed us to the top of Doi Suthep, ate at
a restaurant he was familiar with then took off home by himself. and the constant ice-cold water or dirty moat-water
drenching for the week. This includes me. I'll be back after Easter.
