We got the bus to Ban Phe on Friday & met some people on the boat over to Ko Samet; Ashley & Justin from Bristol, Robert from The Netherlands & Marissa & Nick from Arizona, USA. We all decided to stay at the same place called Naga Bungalows in Ao Hin Khok. We literally dropped our bags & headed straight to the beach to catch the last few hours of sun & have a swim in the sea. We went out & as you can expect, (being a Friday night), we all got drunk.
Marissa & Nick only stayed the one night so left on the Saturday, the other five of us have spent the past week & a half together. The next couple of days, (Saturday to Monday) were spent mainly on the beaches & in the bars of Ko Samet. Throughtout the week and a half we have met lots of other people from various countries around the world & have had so much fun. Tuesday we decided to hire motorbikes & see more of the island. As Robert has his own motorbike, we figured he would probably drive faster so Claire & I did scissors, paper, stones
Our last night on Ko Samet in our Christmas Hats
Back - Ashley, middle, from the left - Robert, Justin, Claire, Front - me! & so did Justin & Ash to see who went on the back of whose bike. Justin & I both lost, so I went on the back of his bike.
The first thing I said as we got on the bike, (without helmets - they don't use them in Asia), was check the brakes work. About ten minutes later we are going down a hill & Justin said to me the back brake doesn't work, about another ten minutes later the three bikes went down a massive hill & nearly had a pile up, Justin & I, (having no back brakes), tried to put our feet down to stop the bike but we both fell off. (Don't worry Mom, I had a few cuts on my hand & leg but was fine).
Luckily we weren't going very fast as there are no proper roads on the island, just rubble tracks. The rest of the day we got to see some amazing beaches & Nurse Fish, (Claire), cleaned up my cuts & looked after me. However I have never been so scared in my life. We watched the sunset sat on the rocks at the most Southern point on the island & then I prepared myself for the ride home. I decided to go on the back of Robert's bike, as everytime Justin & I got to a big downward or upward hill I would have to get off & walk up/down.
I would like to point out that both Robert & Justin were very safe drivers/riders or whatever, (although Robert was faster) & I did feel a lot safer on a bike with brakes! After that day & I decided I needed a drink, (to calm my nerves) & another drunken night followed where I was spinning on the dance floor & moshing to Blur's Song 2 with some random people, (I have been told I was very funny).
Wednesday was spent lounging on the beach, followed by dinner & a fairly quiet night. Thursday we went on a speed boat trip to several other islands, (including Koh Khudi & Koh Thalu), where we got to fish, (Claire caught a fish, I didn't), & snorkel. It was so exciting going on a speed boat, we had the front of the boat pretty much to ourselves & got to take some brilliant photos.
We also got to visit a Fish Farm where I got to hold a baby turtle & we saw sharks & the most amazing creature ever, a puffer fish. The man pulled him out the water & stuck his fingers in his eyes, (I thought he was hurting him), then the fish starts to puff up into a round shape with spikes, it was great; when he was put back in the water he deflated, returning to normal size & swam off.
We had a themed night on Friday, where we all dressed in black, I got a little bit tipsy that night as well but its all good fun! We have found a drink, (Thai Whiskey), called Sangsom, that is 80% proof, we all end up drunk when we drink it & we end up winning competitions in the bars for doing press ups, (well the boys did) & Claire & I won free drinks for spinning.
Yesterday I had a manicure, pedicure & foot scrub/rub from someone on the beach I think was a ladyboy, Claire had a Thai body massage from someone who was definitely a ladyboy, I see them all the time now & lots of fat white middle aged men with young pretty Thai girls that theymust have brought off the net!
We went out for a nice meal & a few drinks for our last night yesterday, the five of us wearing santa hats, everyone must have thought we were mad. I was quite sad to leave Ko Samet this morning, we have made some great friends, but we are now back in the madness of Bangkok & Khao San Road for the night before heading to Cambodia at 6.40am tomorrow.
It has been so nice to relax & not have to carry my ever increasing rucksack around; hopefully we will be spending Christmas Day on a beach in Cambodia but plans may change depending on transport & roads in Cambodia, which is rumoured to be more difficult.
