I slept the whole way from Siem Reap to Ko Chang. I was exhausted - I was lucky dad was in charge of making the travel plans. We had basically heard nothing but horror stories about backpackers trying to cross the border with the bus - people getting ripped off, busses abandoning travelers, buses leaving hours later than scheduled, and all kinds of other things. Keeping all that in mind, dad decided we should just taxi it the whole way. One taxi picked us up at the hostel, we crossed the border by foot, and picked up another taxi on the Thai side which took us past Trat and to the ferry dock. The ferry from the mainland to the island of Ko Chang took about half an hour and then it was another 20 minutes or so before we were settled in our hostel - a bungalow near the water called Remark Puzi.
There isn't much to tell about my last 5 days in Thailand. I was determined to do nothing but sit around the entire time, and I was mostly succesful. The first day I slept in and then lay in a hammock all day reading my book.
The next day dad and I went out for two dives. It was nice, but we felt a little bit cheated because they had promised us that we would see sea turtles and then took us to a sanctuary on land. We didn't see any turtles in the water and it was pretty disappointing. The dives were nice, but nothing out of the ordinary - Australia was better. Our last day on the island I made dad drop me off at a beach and I just sat in the sun and waded in the water for 5 hours. It was perfect and exactly what I wanted to do. While I was sunning, dad drove around on a bike he rented. It was a wonderfully relaxing way to end the crazy 5 weeks we had just had.
We took a bus early the next morning for Bangkok. One of dad's friend's had said weeks earlier that she wanted to bring us to a puppet show on my last night. We had dinner and saw the Royal Thai Puppet Show do a presentation on the story of Ganesh. It was fantastic - every puppet has 3 people controlling it, all moving
the same way as the puppet. We walked around a market for a little while after, but didn't buy anything. The next day my flight left at midnight, so we spent the day doing the last few things I wanted to see in Bangkok before leaving - the sunday market so I could buy my souvenirs for people back home, Jim Thompson's House, and found a book store for me. I showered and packed and we went for one last Chang beer and then took a taxi to the airport. I checked in and had to hug dad from over a barrier before going through security (which took forever). I was on my own again now and heading to South Korea, where its definitely colder. Good thing I have a good tan now, I think I'm all out of chances.
