So a couple days ago there was a Thai Holiday called childrens day taking place and I had no idea what to expect. Well Mary informs me that they completely dress the little kids from the school in different outfits for different dances. There were several different dance routines and it was a bigger deal than I was anticipating. The dances ranged from traditional thai to a techno themed crazy dance and from ages 5-11. I have a video that shows off some of the young ladies dancing and they are decked out with make up and look like tiny women, kind of creepy when you are standing right next to them, not to mention I am a huge white guy filming them to make it even creepier haha. I am not one for children but there was also one performance with very young kids that were actually following a pretty complex dance routine that was pretty impressive and cute. Each performance was introduced by three children that explained them in their own language of study, Thai, Chinese, and English. Thankfully or I would not have understood a thing.
The next day I have nothing to do and eventually try
to entertain myself by getting something crazy to eat. I end up deciding to go to the really nice mall named Central and end up on going to a nice sushi buffet with the conveyor belt that is constantly having food of all sorts run down it. Little did I know that the restaurant has a boiling pot where you cook your own food. I am by myself and no one speaks english and I have absolutely no idea how to prepare food and use this personal boiler. To make matters worse they use chopsticks with everything and I cannot use them at all. After asking the lady next to me in fractured thai with my handy phrase book the manager comes over and tries to teach me. He ends up just showing me how to make food after food from bacon to octopus to boiled egg to chicken with different spices. Practically I was a child and he was baby sitting me in the middle of a nice restaurant where I am the only white person. At least I tried a ton of different foods, plus the manager gave me 10 percent off the buffet origionally 300 baht(10 bucks).
I had a pretty good laugh with this one.
Later on I end up meeting everyone at the night street food market and enjoyed some fish that was slow roasted over charcoal with like 4 english teachers an australian backpacker and Mary's boyfriend. Mary ended up bringing her Thai friends Tong and Tang who fortunately knew better english than anyone else we have encountered which was awesome because we interrogated them on Thai culture and their language. My new phrase is Kun suewhy jung Kahp which means "you are beautiful from my heart" can't wait to test it out haha. We had a great time and ended up getting Orange Ice squash and a couple other flavors which in translation is a vodka smoothy. A pitcher was a 100 baht or about 3 dollars. Very good conversation was shared. I learned a lot from the australian backpacker Anthony about Vietnam and Cambodia and we all intellectually grew thanks to Tong and Tang!
