Hmbantota became the first city in a draw conducted during the lodgement ceremony to present to the General Assembly in St Kitts and Navis on November 2011. The bidding process commenced in 2010 when the two cities submitted a formal nomination to the CGF to host 2018 Commonwealth Games. Bid lodgment is considered of utmost importance as it flags off the race to gain the host status for 2018 commonwealth games which gives an opportunity to provide a legacy for future generations.

India became the hosts in 2010 and Glasgow is preparing for the 2014 and again hopefully,Sri Lanka in 2018. Sri Lanka has begun to set out for the socio-economic development at a greater pace with deeper confidence. The peace and stable political climate, needless to say, acts as a catalyst for unhindered growth. The ambitious development projects of the government all aim to make Sri Lanka the centre of excellence in Asia.
