I've just had a startling revelation, dear reader. It's suddenly dawned on me this part of the world is absolutely teeming with people. Wherever you go in Sri Lanka the situation is the same, it's a case of people here, people there, there are people everywhere! While at a bus stop in Colombo I stuck my arm out to hail a bus, and accidentally stiff armed a guy behind me who just happened to be walking by. And if you change direction while walking on the side of the road, you'll more than likely end up with a tuk tuk up your bum. However, us human beings are adaptable creatures, and as I enjoy my second week in the country the constant crowds are starting to feel like the most natural thing in the world. The ... read more

Today we were going to have a tour of Sri Lankan ‘police stations’ before we continued our journey - yes really!!! We had to go back to the local police station at Hungama to collect a copy of our statement which we had given to the police the night before. On arrival we were greeted by the same Officer we had seen previously and after some ‘conversation’ between Jaywa and him they marched off with Paul to meet the Officer in Charge. Whilst I was waiting for Paul to return (hopefully he would not get locked in the cells) quite a few families were waiting to be seen by the Officer in Charge. A couple of young lads were sitting quietly with their father - not sure what they had been up to - they were ... read more

We had just seen some of the best things that the natural world has to offer, now the 2ndpart of this trip was to watch some of the greatest sporting achievements this planet has to offer, or so we hope. Yep, Sri Lanka’s main sporting passion is the same as mine, cricket, and luckily, and obviously totally coincidentally, England happened to be playing a test series here so we headed off to Unawatuna, just south of Galle, where the 1st match was due to be played. So we didn’t have any surprises on day 1 we decided to head into the town and see what it had to offer, luckily for later in the week the bus station is right outside the ground and just the other side of the stadium is the impressive Galle Fort. ... read more

I've always really enjoyed my cricket, attending tests, one-dayers and T20s whenever I got the opportunity. I've also always wanted to visit Sri Lanka, having heard great things about it from everyone that's been there. Therefore when I found out that England were touring Sri Lanka in March 2012, it sounded like the perfect combination!! A willing companion would be a bonus, and Chris Alger was keen too, as were a couple of the RCC team Brian and Mark, who came out for the first week to watch the cricket in Galle. Chris and I had a three week trip, of which week 1 would be watching the cricket and the next 2 weeks travelling through this amazing island. For the first time that I'd seen, the test match was scheduled to run from a Monday ... read more

There was once a conversation between two, one was an inquisitive would-be traveller, the other Sri Lanka. Traveller: So Sri, do you mind if I call you Sri? How are you? Sri Lanka: Sure, I don't mind, I'm a really chilled out kind of country, Sri it is. I'm doing good. Weather is good, bit wet in the afternoons though, and the tourists are starting to arrive from Europe. All in all pretty good. Traveller: Cool, good to know, so I'm planning on coming to see you in the not too distant future and wanted to ask you a few questions if that's ok? Sri Lanka: Of course, go ahead. Shoot. Traveller: Well I heard recently you were visited by three intrepid girls? Why did they ever come to see you? Sri Lanka: Ah yes, those ... read more

Here is our last entry of a very cool trip to Sri Lanka. And yes, as you guess, it had to involve diving. You come to Sri Lanka to enjoy your time, not for a diving trip. But while you are here, you may still log one or two dives on the way. This is precisely what we did with a single dive at Hikkaduwa Gala. We dived with Poseidon diving. It was the second day of the season, so I wasn't expecting much in term of visibility. We were still lucky with at least 10 meters visibility...in a 30 degres celsius water. The equipement of the dive center was fine, but these guys are simply mad. The "boss" warned me...my divemasters don't speak much english....that's ok, I had a preview of the dive site before....because ... read more

Trincomalee to Kandy Our matron at our Trincomalee hotel instructs us how to get to Nuwara Eliya, a hill station in the central mountains in Sri Lanka. We take the bus back to Kandy, which leaves at 8:30am. Thankfully it's the only A/C bus of the day. It costs a whopping $1.50 to travel from Trinco to Kandy in A/C luxury, a 300km, 5 hour journey. The bus stops often to pick up passengers, and soon the bus is packed, but its still relatively comfortable, given the A/C. Kandy Once back in Kandy, after realizing we're too late for today's train to Nuwara Eliya, we're ready for lunch so we stop off at a restaurant. Kandy is a crazy place to catch a bus because its the central hub of the country, so there's about ... read more

On the way to the beaches of the western coast we stopped at a few temples and sacred pilgrim sites, one of them is Kirinda situated near the beach, there is a temple perched atop huge boulders, there are lots of people walking around the beach, mostly families on a pilgrimage during Vesak.Another is the ancient place called Situl Pauwa and like most of the other temples here it's perched atop huge rocks, apparently they did this so everyone can see where the temples are cause way back then there were no roads and people have to navigate through the forests, this serves like a beacon, a guide for them to follow directions. Then we stopped at this town called Kudawella where they have this blow hole among the rocky cliffs near the sea, I have ... read more

Tuesday 16th Hers… As I was a total write-off yesterday, today was a day for exploring. We caught a local bus to Galle - an old town about 20 kms from Hikkaduwa. There is a fort surrounding the old city and is pretty to look at and walk around. Jarrod’s kind smile is a signal to all “come in spinner”. Their line is “Where you from?” “Ahh Australia, ricky ponting?…” and then the dupe goes from there. I was suffering from travel sickness and lagged behind whilst Jarrod’s newest friend took us on a “short cut” to the government shopping centre. This was, of course a rip off. Turned out to be a gem, lace and whatever other local wares that they could possibly sell. We have much to learn about the local touts still. We ... read more

I was on my way to Sri Lanka - this marked the halfway point of my trip, and the first non-surface travelling. The plane was only half full, and it was only a short trip, less than four hours. This did nothing to help the fact that the flight was from 11pm to 4.45am (Sri Lankan time) so sleep was a trifle lacking that night. But what did I care, who did not have to work that day (/week/month/year)? On board I gratefully accepted a gin and tonic - my first drink since the homemade 'syrup' in Tehran. The steward obviously thought I needed fortifying, as when he poured me a glass of wine with my meal, he then said, "Have another", and duly filled a plastic tumbler for me. This was quite a difference from ... read more
