After leaving Singapore I did a quick stop over in Kuala Lumpur for just one night. I'll probably spend some more time there in a few weeks as I have to fly out of there again mid Jan.
The good news is I found a good hostel this time and had a good evening there chatting to a couple from the Netherlands and playing pool with them. They were interesting people about my age and they had just spent four months in Jakarta as volunteers, you can imagine all the great stories they had, I was like a dear in the head lights listening to them.
I'm already looking forward to settling down somewhere for more than a few nights so I can relax a bit more... It really takes a lot of energy each day to navigate your way around in a weird city (in the heat), find accommodation, be on guard and take in everything around you at the same time. Couple of random thoughts;
- Coffee is already a luxury item for me. I snuck a quick one in at Singapore airport yesterday but with a 25kg backpack on your back it's just not the
same and that’s if you can find one too!
- I saw this crazy advertising sign above a cafe today in KL. It was spraying a mist of water from it (see picture) onto the foot path.. crazy hey! Clever though! I'm know a big Pepsi fan after that.
- When backpacking, weight is everything. I've already thrown out a couple of things (including a few xmas pressies but I won't say which ones!). It's just too much stuff to carry around. It doesn’t take long to figure out what is important and what’s not
- Also Singapore’s transport system is one of the best I've ever been on... in contrast KL's is shit house (see story below).
Quick Story about the Buses in KL. I had to catch a bus to Penang from KL, its about a five hour ride north. So I bought a ticket from one of the hundred different vendors at this big bus station all competing for your business (only cost about $15 to go from KL to Penang, 500km... crazy hey). Anyway the bus was meant to leave a 10.30am and at about 11am they took me up the street two blocks to
another bus. At about 11.30 we were all still waiting (bus was half full) and after they ferried three more groups to the bus we finally left KL at 12.30pm. I think I worked it out. They must do this every day. There’s probably only a couple of bus loads that actually go each day and they all try and sell tickets for it as there own service/bus etc. Then if the bus is not full they simply wait until it is, cos the minute the last person got on we were off at 100 mile an hour!
Afterwards there is meant to be this other spectacular show you can watch for another hour but no joke the queue for it was about 1km long and had around 3000 people in it by the time my tram got back to the compound... I took one look at it and kept walking... no show can be that spectacular.
