So the football (fa, not the crappy champo), what a game it was, I spent 9+ hours in an Irish bar owned by a German, eating English food and awaiting the feast of goals. I did so well to avoid English cuisine, but a cheese burger and Scampi and chips just called out to me (it gave me the shits - bloody western food). Potter has also decided after numerous English breakfasts failed to meet the desired quality level, to return back to the rice and meat routine. The morning before the final we went sea kayaking, and even ventured into some stunning sea mangroves on the Krabi coast. This was the seen for another attack by monkey’s. They leapt off the trees around us onto our Kayak, of course with monkey - human relations not going so well last time, we were, excuse my French - shitting it (and not because of the English food), but they proved to be a friendlier version of the phi phi mammals, I even fed them as they excreted over potter. That completed my final day in Thailand, next stop Malaysia.
After a very long journey across the boarder to a place called
George town in Penang, we decided to use the wisdom of my travel book to find a nice hotel in which to rest our weary souls. The book which describe the hotel as luxury (we questioned this as it only cost us a fiver between us), ended up being the worse place we have stayed in. To avoid our pit of a hotel room, we went into the night to view the sights of George town, oh I wish I stayed in my pit. In Thailand you can tell which ones are the ladyboys, but at least they made an effort. The George town shemales belonged on a kitchen roll advert. With their broad shoulders, protruding jaw lines and stubble, made them a scary sight, and our pace quickened when they called out ‘hello love’, with their deep husky voices. We left the delightful Penang behind us the following day, and I have not yet spoken of the experience until now.
The next stop was the Cameron highlands. The journey on the coach was long, but the sights were an utter delight. The coach climbed and climbed, snaking its way through jungle hills and passing through clouds. The Cameron
Highlands itself are a wonder to the eye’s Rolling hills and sweeping valleys. It does however rain here all the time, and apparently its not even the rainy season. With the rain comes a coolness I have not felt in Asia so far though, its like a English summers night. We stayed her for three nights, a while for us, but we have done a lot. The highlight must have been a jungle trek, which was more like rock climbing and stream scrambling, than walking. Sweat was dripping off me, but there were chances to cool off in waterfalls along the way.
I have also been to a tea plantation - The Jules and Matt would have been in heaven. Other things I have done in no particular order are:
- visit a butterfly farm
- A insect and reptile house
- A bee farm
- Shot a blow pipe - silent but deadly
- I went on a nine game unbeaten run at pool - which the challengers had to pay for.
I have spent a few nights at the oldest rainforest in the world - Taman Negara. Our hotel room window looks out across the river
to the misty jungle - its great. We have done a few treks in the rainforest itself, easier walks than in the Cameron highlands, but its so much more humid. My favorite trek featured a canopy walk on rope bridges, we were so far up, the jungles floor was barely visible - not the greatest for those who are scared of heights. The night safari was also impressive, the guide book sold it to me by this quote 'see nocturnal animals as they are stunned by the powerful light beam', they really meant to say a torch. It was good though. It was great when we turned off the torch in a jungle opening, you couldn't see your hand in front of you, but the stars were out in force and so so bright, you could even make out Satellites moving across the sky. The restaurants there were also floating on the river, which was strange.
