I used to have a thought that my hometown Bentong was an simple town and with hills surround and jungles unexplored. And I am proud of its 'ruralness' even though sometimes I do complain that lack of entertainments and night-out spots. Maybe Bentong is just 70km from the hustling and bustling Kuala Lumpur and near to the only legal gambing spot in Malaysia, Genting Highlands, Bentong starts to develope. Some parts of the hills have been exploited and developed into housing area, more shops are being built, rumour has it that we are going to have McDonalds in Bentong. Well, I like how Bentong it is now at the moment, Not too hustling but is developed. But after a decade, I do not know if I will still like it here.
Me and my friends had a stop in Teluk Cempedak, Kuantan before heading to Sungai Lembing. I didnt like Teluk Cempedak. It might be the favourite hang out place for both locals and tourists, but it is definitely not a clean and nice place to swim. Mcdonald's paper cups floating and sank down in the seabed, we stopped swimming when we found a disgusting, dead animal lying on the
beach, not sure if it was a giant mouse or a baby lamb..Disgusting enough, when I saw the sea water dashing against the dead body after I dipping myself in the water for nearly one hour.
After that we took a taxi to the local bus station and headed to Sungai Lembing. It took one and a half hour to reach the small town, it was quite rural. Along the journey we passed by palm trees plantation and rubbber estates..Malay villages of course. You can see cows by the road side enjoying their grasses like they don't care if they are blocking your way. When we arrived in Sungai Lembing in evening we thought maybe we might need a taxi. We were wrong, there was no taxi in Sungai Lembing town unless you ask for a taxi driver, all the way from the nearest city, Kuantan. The town was so tiny, tiny than I thought it was. From the bus station, that was not even a proper bus station, just a place where any cars and big vehicles can be parked at. We took a minute walking from the bus stop to the rest house, and greeted warmly by
the owners. They explained to us what can we do for the next two days we stayed in town. They also helped us to engage a guide to the Rainbow waterfall.
Before the trip, we knew that each person were required to pay the guide 40 Ringgit to get to the Rainbow waterfall, and I thought that it was really expensive. I mean it was just a waterfall, the guide's job was to drive us to the waterfall, that's all. No!! it was not just a waterfall that we can easily reach! It is located in the thick forest. We set off in the morning. One and a half driving journey through the muddy and rocky road, we sat at the back of the 4x4 truck and often got hit by tree branches and twigs. Most unfortunately. it rained, no, it was pouring catsanddogs to be precise..me and my friends got soaked already before reaching the waterfall. Plus it was in the morning, before sunrise, the strong cold wind you felt when you were on fast moving vehicles, and the heavy cold rains, we were literally shaking out of coldness for total one and a half hour. And we didnt
reach the waterfall by the truck, the truck stopped by a riverside and we had to cross the river and start to jungle-trek uphill, and this took us one more hour to finally reach the beautiful Rainbow waterfall.
Nowadays, Sungai Lembing has raised its popularity among the Malaysians, I don't think much foreigners know about this place..some Singaporeans may do.
When trekking uphill, many other tourists seemed to have troubles trekking with their flip-flops on the wet and slippery rocks. I can tell they were amazed by the tall trees and the forest. I spent most of my childhood time in my father's orchard playing, catching fishes and worms with my brother. I was amazed that they felt amazed seeing so many trees at the same time!haha. When trekking uphill, all in my mind was" it is too easy to do, i gotta do a more challenging one". Well when I think back last year I swore that this year I had to conquer Mt Kinabalu, I feel really bad because until now I havent saved enough money to do so. Maybe I will do it next year. No, I have to, do it next year. I wanna
do something significant in my teenage year.
Well back to the Rainbow waterfall. When we reached there, it looked like a natural swimming pool with a fountain sprinkling water all the way down from the mountain top. The water flow was calm, not deep at all, almost exactly like a pool! The guide even boiled some water straight from the waterfall and made us Milo and instant noodles. And we liked it!
We stayed in Sungai Lembing for 3 days. It was probably the last travel with my friends before secondary school ended.
