Tubing
Arriving at the 1st bar... We are now in Vang Vieng and have spent the last 6 switching being adventure travelers and lazy tourists.. We have loved this town, its been great to stay in the same place for a while.
One day we jumped onto our pushbikes, deciding to ride the 14km, dirt rode track, on bikes that were meant for 12 year olds, in the heat of South East Asia, without a real map, and any idea actually what we were going to see... to end up amongst beautiful little villages, on rivers, with everyone yelling out sabai dii (hello there beautiful Australian girls) to come to a cave, in water. We get there, after taking all the right turns (somehow, as we decided to not take the young guide who tried to follow us the whole way) to this man who spoke no English but gave us a huge head torch which was attached to loose wiring, that he tried to burn with a lighter so it wasn't so exposed (really great when you are about to jump in a river with it) and a tube... so we got into the river, fully dressed as it wasnt the exact time to hop
River Bar
You can't tell me this is not the most prime bar location you've seen.. into our bikinis and pulled ourselves along this rope, underneath rock ledges and in the total darkness of a cave. It was overall, pretty amazing and we were very impressed with ourselves for being so adventurous... then, we winged to each other the 2km back to our bikes as we were dripping wet, muddy, cold and had the prospect of another 14km ride home... after riding a hard, bumpy, sore bottom ride of a whole km we found a tuk tuk... chucked our bikes in and away we went... home 20minutes later...
The next day we got serious and went tubing. This was pretty hard work... we had to get into a tuk tuk that dropped us off at the river, to then hop into our tubes and float down a beautiful, clear river, where every 5 minutes there was a bamboo bar, with cold beer lao. So, we decided that we were going to have to do it tough today, and probably drink a bit too much beer, mayb a bucket of vodka and perhaps meet some new friends. We started off the day, deciding we actually quite liked each others company and that we didnt need many
friends, as everyone else seem to have tons... it was ok, we didnt look like losers as we didnt actually mind you see... but before we knew it we were at a bar, with 10 brown European boys who were buying us beers and baguettes, and the lady at the bar deciding shots of lao lao (potent rice stuff, with grass and weeds in it) were on the house. It is very rude not to accept the offers of your hostess, so of course, being the polite girls we are, we went ahead... about half way down the river, a few more bars later, and after meeting lots of people who had started 3hours after us (our tubes were numbered in the order we left), we realised that perhaps the setting of the sun wasnt such a great thing and maybe we would just have to take a tuk tuk back into town... yes, thats right, we actually only made it half way down the river... 2km in 6hrs.... we decided this must be a positive thing though, as surely riding home in a tuk tuk with 10 new friends signifies a day well spent! We got back and went
Pretend-a-friend!
One of the river bars...no really, we did make friends with them! They bought us baguettes! to a bar with an Aussie girl we had met during the day and had some pizza and a quite a few more drinks. Woke up the next morning, feeling great (no really, we did! Miracle). We both had a 1 hr massage with oils for US$4... bliss!
A couple of (lazy) days later was Australia Day! Woo Woo! We were pretty bummed to miss the hottest 100 but decided it wasn't quite worth sitting in an internet cafe all day for. So we went tubing again! This time we went with a whole bunch of (mostly) Aussies. It was great, much the same as last time but with different people (there's this saying around SE Asia actually - "same same but different" - amazing how often it applies!) We drank and tubed all day again, but this time could heard the occasional 'aussie aussie aussie' coming down the river (pretty embarrassing actually) and there was a massive 3 hr marathon of a beach volley ball game at one of the bars. The 'aussie challenge' was to have a beer at every bar... Predictably we only made it to the same half-way mark as last time when the sun
Darcie tubing...
... with all the boys! Go darc you little flirtatious she-devil! started to go down and we had to finish early. Again!
