Our first night in Laos was spent in the lowest budget accomodation, it was a wooden hut in the middle of an underdeveloped town, called Pak Beng, where our slow boat docked for the evening................. and we thought our last place was bad! Never the less the slow boat journey taking us through Laos was stunning, the endless view of green trees and mountain on top of mountain is very peaceful. On both days we had an 8 hour journey along the Mekong River, during which we learnt to train our bladders! The boat journey was long but pleasent and was full of 'farang's' (thai for foreign travellers).
We arrived on the 14 October at a lovely town called Luang Prabang and have both fallen in love with this town! We highly recomend Luang Prabang to everyone, its just so nice; its clean, great cafes serving delicious food, it almost felt like we were in a European city! While in Luang Prabang we went to visit the citys Wat, Phu Si, situated at the top of a hill over looking the town. We were hoping to watch a beautiful sun set, but the clouds spoilt our view. The following day
we spend our day at one of the nearby waterfalls, the weather was great and the water was crystal clear and clean!
From Luang Prabang we took a 7 hour bus journey to Van Vieng, and when in Van Veing there is only one thing to do! Float along the Mekong River on an over-inflated truck tyre. It took us 1.5 hours to complete and it was quite daunting cos at the time there were only three girls floating along and trust us there was no one else around only the sound of the river, mountains and wildlife. The book guides are so right about Van Veing, as your evenings are spent sitting in cafes on large sofas watching repeats of friends.
Our final stop in Laos was its capital Vientiane. We managed to cover most of the cities sights by foot in a day. It was tough as it was sooo hot, but we aint complaining! Our thoughts on Laos are that we were not expecting alot but found its true beauty and we were pleasantly surprised!
Goodbye Laos and Hello Cambodia.....
