Bangkok - Pakse - Don Khong - Don Khon - Pakse - Attapeu As I retrieved Vik’s rucksack from an overly confident tuk-tuk drivers vehicle I banged my head on a typically well positioned and unfeasibly rusty Laos road sign. There was an audible “oooo” from the group of drivers who surrounded us. “Happens to me all the time; that was nothing - in Scotland we put barbs on the signs so you r... Read Full Entry

Sometimes the street markets consume the whole street with no light penetrating the awnings and umbrellas of the stalls. Not really open-air markets as such.

The riverfront in Laos is home to the places where the locals eat and drink. Beer Laos is actually a pretty good tipple and is served in enormous bottles - hence the big cheesy grin.

Check out the little Motorbikes with side car things in the foreground. We went on one of those to get to Pakse bus station. Both of us and our luggage were piled into one of them. The driver was a grumpy sod (a rarity in Laos) and wouldn't take us the whole way as he thought his bike would break. Clearly he'd been a little over ambitious when he stopped to offer us a lift.

The only train in LaosThe only train in Laos
The only train in Laos

To continue our theme of catching a train in every country (which I just realised we have failed on as we were in NZ for so long that we forgot to do it before we left). The French built a railway line from one end of Don Khon to Don Det which seemed very odd given that they are very small islands until we read that it was to transport cargo which had come by boat and could go no further because of a rather large waterfall which Don Khon is at the bottom of and Don Det is at the top of. Awhawheehaw.

The roads were so bad that we spent more time pushing the bikes than on them. That and the fact that the chain completely broke on one of them. And then Vik got bitten by something big and bug like and scarey. But it was still a good day. Honest.

There seem to be a very large variety of fishing methods in Laos. Last time we were here in the north it was all nets and hitting them with sticks.

There were actually about 10 different people all selling something different which would have made a much better picture but by the time Vik got the camera out most of them had got bored/sleepy/gone to chat to their friends and wandered off.

It has been a long time since my families left Laos. I love your pictures. It brought back a lot of wonderful memories of my childhood. I hope one day to visit again.
