Day 19, July 14, 2009, Tuesday, Sheishembi: The day yesterday was interesting, Marat woke me about 6 am as planned and told me that I should have breakfast and we would head out to climb the stairs of the mountain to a Museum in a cave at the top of Soloman's Throne, or Suleman's Throne. The rock is a promontory of jagged mountain that dominates the Osh skyline. It sits more or less in the center of the city. From the observation area about half-way up you can look out over all of the city of Osh. Last year when I was here in late July, I was unable to climb the steps due to being even more overweight than I am now, and the fact that the temperature had hit 104 degrees and it was ... read more

Day 18, July 13, 2009, Monday, Duishombu: The day has begun in Osh with the sound of “Allah Ahkbar” issuing from the minarets of the local mosques. It is was unusual to hear the sound at a little before 5 am this morning, since I have not heard it once in Bishkek or in Lake Issy-Kul. And there was something comforting about hearing the call to prayer in a country that while run by a secular government, is predominately Islamic in its belief structures. The day promises to be one of other surprises and revelations, I am sure. I have been to Osh twice before, but on the typical run and shoot visit that marks much of my travels with Emil. We would whisk into town on our way to another destination, manage a meal, pickup ... read more

Donkeys screeching, sheep baaaing, cows mooing, dogs barking, ducks quaking. These are not the sounds that bring skiing to mind. And only 3 years ago, here skiing was unheard of. If you ski here in the next few years you could be classed as a pioneer. I was the 25th person this year and one of the first 50 people ever in the history of the world to ski the mountains off Arslanbob. 4 hours from Osh after a series of shared taxis it is a place that is known locally as a pilgrimage. It is said that the Prophet Mohammed charged a modest gardener to find paradise on earth. When it was found the Prophet gave him fruit and nut seeds to plant around the mountaintops. Now, Arslanbob has the largest walnut grove in the ... read more

Yes, for anyone who is wondering, we are still alive. Lack of internet cafe's and lack of patience on dial-up connections has contributed to our long silence! We have been in Kyrgyzstan since August 27th. It's a beautiful country with lots of mountains and fresh air. The country is not heavily populated and doesn't have big cities so we've been camping quite a bit. Pictures are not working for us right now... The application will not load properly. Maybe later we'll be able to upload some files... Tomorrow we leave for Uzbekistan. Another adventure! Here are some of the things we have been up to: Our first wedding anniversary... September 1st was our first wedding anniversary! For those dying to know how we celebrated, it was not in a fancy hotel with clean clothes. ;-) On ... read more

With the visit to Song-Kul Lake changed due to the snow we had an extra day in Kyrgyzstan. Claire and Dave decided that with a name like Arslanbob we needed to go there ..... Reading the Lonely Planet it sounded like a beautiful place ...walnut forests all around.... a little Uzbek village that is trying to generate more tourism. This year they had 1300 foreign visitors to the village. Once again we headed west. This time we came out of the flat country and back into the hills. We were heading through the Fergana Valley. Arslanbob turned out to be an absolute gem of a place. We had homestays in groups of 4 all around the town. Our homestay was lovely - basic accomodation but really warm and friendly. We all met up in town ... read more

We drove back to Kochkor as we resumed out journey west . It was a great day - driving around the southern side of Lake Issy-Kul. All day it was the lake to the right of us and spectacular snow capped mountains to the left. Everywhere you looked were awesome views. We stopped in a small town for lunch. There seemed to be only one cafe serving food in the town so I think we stressed them out somewhat when all 25 of us turned up to the same place (we usually try to lessen the impact by going to different restuarants). We drove all afternoon and returned to the same homestay in Kochkor that we stayed in earlier. The next couple of nights were bushcamping - with roof seats most of the way! We left ... read more

I have visited a Central Asian embassy for the last time. You have no idea how relieved I am, although this last one was relatively easy. So, Tajik visa in hand, I set off on the 12 hour drive to Osh, in the south of Kyrgyzstan, in a shared taxi. I managed to get the front seat, which was great as I'd read much about the majestic scenery. I was not disappointed - the views were stunningly dramatic, rather like the driving. In fact the driving was more than that. It was terrifying. I have very few photos of the journey because it's hard to keep the camera steady when you're going round a corner at mach 4 with your eyes closed. The screeching tyres I got used to eventually, and in most cases we at ... read more

My chest infection got worse, but it hasn't kept me down! Okay so the last time I left you I was in Osh, well now I am in Tashkent, in Uzbekistan, but first let me connect the dots. My last night in Osh was supposed to be "pretty cruisy" remember? Well, it started out that way, David and I headed out to find some dinner and not wanting to go the freezing cold restaurant from the night before we headed to one that looked warm, sat down and David asked for the menu. The waitress looked at him and asked why we needed a menu if they only served one thing, chicken. Not wanting chicken we asked for some beers, she left only to return a short time later to say that they didn't have any ... read more

I am in Osh! Just a quick blog this time. The bus trip from Kashgar to Osh was definitely an experience I won't forget for a long time. In the end it took 35 hours to get here; it took 4 hours to get from the start of the Chinese border crossing to the end of the Kyrgyzstan border checkpoint (although they were relatively hassle free); the bus got bogged in four foot deep snow and was stuck for almost an hour; the bus driver's solution to get the bus out was to hook up a tow cable and get all the men off the bus and from the surrounding trucks to try and pull the bus out and after that didn't work only then did he try using a truck to pull the bus out ... read more
